「the mahjong line 麻將線」 這家公司致力於「讓追求精緻的時髦女郎也能愛上這項傳統的棋牌遊戲」。

Mahjong, a tile-based game of strategy with roots in the Qing Dynasty of ancient China, is celebrated across Asia and invokes memories of family, tradition and togetherness for many who played it growing up. When three white women founded a new company called The Mahjong Line, touting sets that intended to replace the traditional tiles with "stylish" ones, they faced immense backlash, with Asian Americans and Asians around the world calling the move cultural appropriation.

麻將是一種源自中國古代清朝的戰略棋類遊戲，現已風靡亞洲。對於許多從小玩麻將的人來說，麻將充滿著對傳統習俗和家庭團聚滿滿的回憶。三個白人女性創立了一家名為「麻將線」的新公司，兜售新型「時尚麻將」，從而取代傳統中國麻將。這一做法遭到了中國網友的強烈反對，海外華人紛紛稱表示：這是文化剽竊！

不少網友在推特上力挺「中國麻將」。

「我們的文化是全世界最古老的文明之一，是數千年傳統和歷史的產物。而不是廉價的塗色書籍，可以被隨意填充，並按照那些臭屁青少年的標準「變得漂亮」。

As many people pointed out, the Mahjong Line didn’t just rebrand the Chinese history behind the game: it wiped it out altogether to be repackaged as something more suitable for the white gaze.

But what the Mahjong Line did wasn’t a loving embrace of an already-beloved game — it was a complete obliteration of the rich history behind the four-player pastime.

美國「內幕消息」（Inside Edition）網站採訪了一位在中國香港長大、目前定居加拿大的網友Yonnie Chan，她表示，「我知道你們想打造自己的風格，但是將其修改得難以辨認就很有問題。麻將起源於中國，不使用（漢字）也反映出你們正在抹去中國文化中不可或缺的部分。」

此事發酵後，該公司在1月5日發表道歉聲明稱，

這只是為了激勵新一代的美國麻將玩家。

「Our mission is to combine our passion for art and color alongside the fun of the game while seeking to appeal to novices and experienced players alike. American mahjong tiles have evolved for many decades and we』d like to be part of this evolution in the most respectful and authentic way possible.」
