Job description

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for the following vacancy within the Department of Social Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences:

Doctoral Candidate (Ph.D. student) in Sociology (m/f)

14 months initial contract (extendable up to 36 or 48 months)

Full-time (40 h/week)

Employee status and student status

Preferably from 1 July 2020

The successful candidate will investigate various policy-relevant facets of social inequality among young people in Luxembourg. To this end, she/he will analyze data collected by the 2019 Youth Survey Luxembourg (YSL), supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Robin Samuel. YSL covers a range of topics such as attitudes, health, political participation, and values. Luxembourg is a highly diverse society and there is a need to better understand how social background shapes life chances and outcomes in a rapidly transforming context.

The successful candidate will become a member of the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences and the Centre for Childhood and Youth Research (CCY) within the Department of Social Sciences. The CCY comprises a multidisciplinary research team that examines the conditions and opportunity structures of growing up against the backdrop of social change and inequalities.

Your Role

Write a cumulative Ph.D. thesis in the domain of social inequality among young people in Luxembourg (mainly based on YSL data)

Participate in national and international conferences

Contribute to reports and research publications

Engage in policy-relevant analyses and dissemination of results to stakeholders

Contribute to preparation and implementation of the next wave of the YSL 2023/24
