Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street has become the city’s outdoor theater
The dark curtain of night serves to make Shanghai's most famous street even more charming than it is in the daytime. Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, stretching from the city's busiest subway hub at People's Square all the way down to the Bund, demonstrates the city's historical heritage along with an endless neon facade that illuminates throngs of tourists beneath like an endless stream.
Shanghai's extraordinary views and spirited atmosphere not only draw more visitors than any other city in China, but also inspires local residents and art aficionados to use the city as a stage for their passion about life.
Aunties performing Chinese-style square dancing in front of stores, and impromptu gatherings of vocalists singing popular melodies from the 1980s, turn Nanjing Road East into a veritable outdoor theater.
There are also cosplay enthusiasts dressed up as their idols who encourage spectators to gather around and watch their unprofessional yet earnest antics (and possibly also donate some spare change).
Although many street performers are seniors from nearby traditional lane housing, some young people have also joined in the nightly revelry.
Using portable amplifiers, they present the latest hip-hop dance moves or rap along to foreign music while visitors from home and abroad film them on their smartphones.
Most of these performers are not officially qualified with a street artist certificate, but order is maintained by kindhearted local authorities who are willing to look the other way so long as everything remains family-friendly.
After all, a lively and entertaining pedestrian street serves to further the local economy while also to promote Shanghai's diversified and highly cultural citizenry.
