1. 安理為法律科技初創企業提供免費辦公空間。英國「魔法圈」的安理國際律師事務所將在倫敦辦公室成立了一個「Fuse」科技中心，專門劃出一塊辦公室區域，免費提供給法律類科技初創公司使用。這一「特別設計」的空間將能夠容納60名創業人員，並允許「早期」和「成熟期」的科技公司接入安理的頂尖法律頭腦。該中心將從四月份開始接受創業公司的申請，而安理尤其傾向於擅長三類業務的企業：為法律諮詢提供支持的技術（legaltech）、為監管合規提供支持的技術（regtech）和改變公司如何交易及談判的技術（dealtech）。這些被選中的企業將在9月份入駐該中心。今年早些時候，另一家律師事務所Mishcon de Reya也啟動了類似項目「MDR LAB」。
Allen & Overy offers free office space to legal tech start-ups
Global giant Allen & Overy is embracing the potentially lucrative world of legal technology by providing free office space to start-ups.
The new 『Fuse』 tech hub will be housed within the magic circle outfit’s plush London office, situated on the boundary of Shoreditch and the City. The 「specially-designed」 space can accommodate around 60 entrepreneurial individuals and will allow 「early-stage」 and 「mature」 tech companies to tap into some of Allen & Overy’s top legal minds.
Applications for the new hub will open next month (April), and the firm is particularly keen to hear from businesses that specialise in 「legaltech」 (technology which supports legal advice), 「regtech」 (technology which supports regulatory compliance) and 「dealtech」 (technology which transforms how companies transact and negotiate deals). The chosen start-ups will move into their new digs in September.
Earlier this year Mishcon de Reya launched a similar initiative. Punting for the rather catchy name 『MDR LAB』, the outfit — which teamed up with London-based innovation investor L Marks — will welcome a number of small tech-based businesses through its doors for ten weeks this summer.
Allen & Overy’s free office space initiative comes just a month after the firm helped launch what is believed to be the United Kingdom’s first ever 「legal innovation centre.」
Teaming up with Baker McKenzie, the magic circle giant threw considerable weight behind a new research centre based within Ulster University. (Legal Cheek)

Freshfields launches Global Associate Innovation Group
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has created a 14-strong Global Associate Innovation Group (AIG) to help generate, champion and test new technology, working with the Legal Services Innovation team led by director Isabel Parker.
The cross practice, cross geography group was launched at the beginning of the year after gaining sponsorship from Freshfields』 senior leadership team, including London managing partner Julian Long and a number of global partners. AIG members will be seconded to the Legal Services Innovation team on a rolling basis. Currently two associates are seconded full-time and two for one day a week.
The AIG will help the magic circle firm to generate ideas in areas such as more innovative pricing, alternative delivery models or simple process improvement. Participating associates are expected to form a network and encourage engagement from their peers. The idea is that rather than creating ideas that risk not being close enough to the business – a common issue for innovation teams – the AIG will help drive and champion change from within their various practice areas. They will pitch their ideas at a senior level and any ideas that have legs will be given financial backing.
Freshfields is in the process of hiring developers for its Manchester legal services centre, which provides transactional support to the firm and forms a hub for much of its development and testing of new software. (Legal Technology)

Slaughters takes stake in AI due diligence company
Slaughter and May has taken a five per cent stake in Luminance with partners at the law firm being given a share of the business now valued at $20 million as part of their work developing the product.
Slaughters invested what is thought to be in the region of $1 million in Luminance - the due diligence AI supported by tech billionaire Mike Lynch - as part of the tech company’s latest funding round after which it valued itself at the figure of $20 million. Slaughters said that the M&A technology was 'the ideal initial area for Slaughter and May to invest in an artificial intelligence system』 and explained that it had invested substantial amount of intellectual capital into Luminance and has played a major part in its creation and development.
While Slaughter and May will use ad hoc technology as directed by clients, as a result of its investment in Luminance, it will not habitually use rival due diligence analysis software tools such as RAVN Systems or Kira Systems. (Globallegalpost, Legal Technology)

Linklaters signs up with Obelisk to access flexible lawyer pool
Alternative legal services business Obelisk Support has struck a ground-breaking deal with Linklaters that will see its pool of flexible lawyers support the magic circle law firm with its resourcing requirements.
Obelisk provides clients with individuals or teams to deal with particular matters on a one-off or on-going basis and allows them to scale their teams up or down as needed. Linklaters will use Obelisk when, for example, an experienced consultant is needed for a discrete piece of work on an ad hoc basis, or to cover a leave of absence such as maternity leave and sabbaticals.
Obelisk boasts the largest pool of flexible lawyers in the country having recently reached the 1,000-lawyer mark. The majority have worked in magic circle and other leading City law firms and also in senior in-house positions. Between them, they cover almost all areas of commercial law. Whilst primarily London based, Obelisk also has lawyers within its network across Europe including France, Germany, Luxembourg as well as parts of Asia, Africa and Central and North America.
Obelisk was founded by Linklaters alumna Dana Denis-Smith and includes other former Linklaters lawyers in its talent pool. Linklaters will be offering its alumni the opportunity to sign up if they are interested in adopting a more flexible approach to their careers. To date, Obelisk has been more focused on supporting general counsel counting the likes of Barclays, BT, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, ING, Intel and Vodafone among its clients – but the model was always designed to work for law firms as well. LexisNexis announces first legal tech accelerator participants
LexisNexis has announced the first five participants in its new Silicon Valley legal tech accelerator programme created to give startups a leg up in the legal tech industry and transform the business of law.
LexisNexis' aims to transform the way law is practiced and each of the accelerator participants is uniquely innovating in distinct areas of the law.
The five finalists – Visabot, TagDox, Separate.us, Ping, and JuriLytics were selected from a list of more than 40 promising startups for the interesting nature of their businesses and their innovative use of technology. Visabot is an 『immigration robot』 powered by artificial intelligence that helps customers complete US visa applications; TagDox, a legal document analysis tool that creates tags, allowing users to identify and structure information in a variety of document types; Separate.us, a web-based application that automates legal document preparation for divorces and provides access to relevant professionals at affordable fixed rates; Ping, an automated timekeeping application that collects all of a lawyer's billable hours, capturing missed time and money which is estimated at 20 per cent across the industry) and JuriLytics, an expert witness peer review service that lawyers can use to challenge their opponent's experts with previously unobtainable credibility and bullet-proof their own expert's work through vetting from the world's top researchers.
