Freedom Summer: You may have heard of MLK Jr., but there were thousands more largely anonymous American heroes who helped to create the modern United States. In response to racial inequality and violence, during the summer of 1964, more than 700 young activists from all corners of the United States and all racial backgrounds headed to the Deep South. Rather than wait for change to come, they forced change. They directly challenged racial discrimination in all aspects of American life. They even founded a political party, forcing politicians to take the need for racial reform seriously. Tragically, several of these brave Americans were murdered for their efforts, but their successes were real.
