Malaria is a disease which is caused by a parasite found in the bite of infected anopheles mosquitoes. Anopheles mosquitoes live in hot, humid climates. They are less likely to be found in areas which have major seasonal changes. This is because these mosquitoes cannot survive winter temperatures below 16 degrees Celsius.
Malaria is caused by one of four protozoan parasites called plasmodium parasites. Protozoa are types of micro-organisms which only contain one cell. Of the two main
types of malaria, benign malaria is milder, whereas malignant malaria can be severe or even fatal. Plasmodium falciparum causes malignant malaria symptoms, such as internal haemorrhaging and jaundice.
Malaria is spread, when female mosquitoes bite someone who is already carrying the malaria parasite. The mosquitoes then bite someone else, passing on the parasite in their saliva. The female mosquito needs to suck blood to nourish her eggs.
The parasite passes through the blood into the liver, where it grows and develops, before returning to the blood stream.
Prevention is the most important contributor to stopping the spread of malaria.
Anti-malarial drugs are used to both prevent and treat the disease, especially when
travelling to at-risk countries. Using insect repellent sprays and creams and sleeping
under mosquito nets are also important prevention measures.
