●Interconnected smoke alarms are an important part of home fire safety. In theevent of fire, the interconnection activates the alert tone on all of the smokealarms in a home. This alert tone greatly improves the chance of hearing analarm if a fire starts in another area of the home from where you are.Unfortunately, very few homes more than 20 years old have wiring installed thatinterconnects the smoke alarms.

● The safetyand peace of mind that comes with an interconnected smoke alarm system can nowbe installed without the expense, mess or high labor costs needed to installwires between each smoke alarm. Wireless smoke alarms are available to fitalmost any home. They are available in both battery powered and AC powered.

● Wirelessinterconnected smoke alarms are easy to install and only involve a few simplesteps.

1. All home safety devices should be listed by a nationally recognized testinglaboratory. The most well-known of these is Underwriters Laboratories (UL).Look for the familiar UL marking on the product and packaging to be sure thatthe product complies with safety standards.（所有居家安全裝置應該都列於國家認可測試實驗室之名單中。最知名的實驗室如保險商試驗室。在產品及包裝上尋找商標，以確認產區符合安全標準。）
2. All of the wireless interconnected smoke alarms in a home must be of thesame make and model so they can communicate with one another. At present, thevarious models are not interchangeable.

3. Purchase enough smoke alarms so you can install at least one on every floorof the home, including the basement, one in each bedroom, and one in the hallwayoutside of each sleeping area.

4. It is very important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing anysmoke alarm. There are a few special considerations that apply to wireless smokealarms. These considerations are detailed in the owner’s manual packaged with each smokealarm. It is best to have a licensed electrician do the work if wiring isinvolved.

●Interconnected smoke alarms can be an important part of family home safety.However, many older homes do not have the wiring installed for interconnectedsmoke alarms. Wireless smoke alarms listed by Underwriters Laboratories are nowavailable. The safety of interconnected smoke alarms can now be installed withoutthe expense, messy wiring or cost of a licensed electrician. Both batterypowered and AC powered alarms are available to fit almost any residentialstructure.

● Wirelessinterconnected smoke alarms are easy to install and only involve a few simplesteps. The first step is to determine what type of smoke alarms are currentlyin the home: battery powered, hardwired or hardwired with interconnect.

● Batterypowered: There are no wires connected to the back of the alarm. The smoke alarmis only powered by a battery or batteries.

● Hardwired:There are two wires connected to the back of the smoke alarm (typically onewhite and one black). You can determine if an alarm is 「hardwired」 by confirming that two power wiresare connected to it, then by pressing the test button on the alarm andlistening for other alarms to sound. You can determine if an alarm is 「hardwired with interconnect」 by confirming that three wires areconnected to it, then pressing the test button and listening for other alarmsto sound. If other alarms do sound, the alarm is 「hardwired with interconnect」.
