Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said on Thursday he was "grateful" after he agreed a contract extension at the English Premier League club.
The new deal, which runs until the end of the 2022-2023 season, extended Guardiola’s commitment to City to seven years.
The 49-year-old has guided the club to two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups and two Community Shields since his arrival in 2016.
He said he still has "unfinished business" and that the support of chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak was key to his contract extension.
Guardiola’s current five-year stay is already the longest commitment he has made to a football club since he became Barcelona head coach in 2008 – and this extension will see him overtake Joe Mercer to put him second on City’s list of longest-serving post-war managers.
Pep Guardiola Manchester City manager:
(About his feelings after signing a contract extension at the club)
"I am so satisfied and grateful for the confidence from the whole club, the organisation and, yeah, I am happy to continue to do our best for this club, for this organisation (in the) next (couple of) years."
Pep Guardiola Manchester City manager:
(About why he decided to extend his stay at Manchester City)
"Well, as a manager, I have everything that I need (at Manchester City), especially I know all the managers depend on results - of course, me as well. And we have to win, to continue. But I saw many, many times in the bad moments how the people here support me - of course, Ferran (Soriano, Manchester City Chief Executive) and Txiki (Begiristain, Manchester City Director of Football) - but especially Khaldoon (Al Mubarak), our chairman, and this was the main reason. That is why I decided to continue (as Manchester City manager). We had long talks this week all together. And we put (the question forward whether) both sides continue or not. And, at the end, we decided the best (thing) for all of us is to continue, because we have the feeling that there is still unfinished business and still we have something to do, (to) continue what we have done (over) the last years."
