「數字人文」是否會取代傳統人文的教學和科研？這是與會者普遍關心的問題。北京大學朱本軍、聶華認為，「數字人文」並不能一攬子解決所有人文問題，它對傳統人文研究的促進，一方面體現在將人文學者從機械、繁重的資料查找、文本比對等工作中解脫出來，使其在學術研究中具有更廣闊的思辨、演繹、推理的空間；另一方面體現在通過數位化、工具軟體等手段將社會科學領域的某些研究方法引入人文領域，創新人文研究方法和研究範式，從定性到定量輔助加定性，為人文研究提出問題、界定問題和回答問題提供新的視角。人文學者提出問題、分析問題和解決問題的敏覺力是數字人文所不能代替的。哈佛大學徐力恆博士以CBDB為例，認為CBDB資料庫絕非是對歷史文獻的取代，而是一種新的文獻打開方式、查詢方式、呈現方式。他也表示，數位技術只是歷史學者使用的一種研究工具，在研究中應發揮人文學者和計算機各自的長處。
作為一個以跨界與融合為特點的新興領域，數字人文還將不斷變化和再定義。儘管國內外已經開展了一些與數字人文相關的研究與實踐，但要在全球範圍內，特別是中國國內形成明顯的數字人文研究共同體，尚需時日。
