The 2016 "China Mobile Cup" NUIST Winter Marathon was held on 18th Dec. The annual event organized by the NUIST Sports Dept. was fully sponsored by China Mobile. Marathon, which is a big and very patronized sport event in NUIST, proved to also be a keenly contested one, amidst some fun moments. The event included 40 competitors from each of the twenty (20) Colleges of NUIST. CIS was represented by 26 boys and 14 girls.
The opening ceremony.
The Participants were taken through a brief session of aerobics before the start of the race.
The 7-kilometre (4.35-mile) route consisted of two short laps of 1.5 kilometres followed by one long lap of 4 kilometres to be finished within a stipulated time of 1.5 hours. The course, which was designed to pass through many of NUIST well-known landmarks, started and finished in front of the Reading Academy building on the East Campus of the University. Every eligible participant who registered for the competition were ready at exactly 2:00 pm.
The Police and health personnels were all ready for this event.
The event officials...
The starting shot was fired to signal the commencement of the long distance race, and you can trust the Chinese for their time consciousness. The marathon route started in front of the Reading Academy heading towards the Meteorology Building, passed under the bridge, proceeded towards Mingde Building via a small roundabout towards the Teacher’s Canteen area. It then lead the runners pass the Confucius statue (that symbolically depicts academic excellence), a slight turn to the right onto Students Dormitory #2 and #3, which dropped down to the NUIST Meteorology Station over a distance of 500 metres from dormitory 02 to reach the first lab at Bingjiang Playground. This first lab is the longest straight stretch in the race, about 4 km.
Like a swarm of bees, one could hardly conduct a head count of the athletes as they sped off from the starting line in their numbers .
The runners passed the Bingjiang playground, turned left and continued along the NUIST Library main road and followed the road towards the Middle Campus Canteen. The runners then passsed and turned left eventually along a winding route onto the front of Xiangqiang Building opposite the Student’s Sports Training Center to meet the second lap.
CIS' Dereba (Ethiopia) displays extraordinary fitness around the Middle Campus Canteen area.
CIS' Tatyana (Russia) showing determination and perseverence while the crowd cheer her on.
On the second lap, competitors then made their way towards Mingde Building via the Confucius statue via the Meteology station via Bingjiang playground and on towards the library road that passes through the Middle Campus Canteen and back to the Xiangqian building.
In the heat of the moment, some athletes were spotted seemingly asking themselves whether to continue or to throw in the towel as their legs became too heavy to carry them on.
When the flesh becomes weak even as the spirit is willing, you experience a conflict of interest between two beings.
After the second lap at the Xiangqian building, the race descended a short steep of 70 metre hill paved with stones, a feature that is meant to increase drag force and reduce speed posed as a challenge to the athletes. The runners passed under the bridge before rejoining the main route towards the the starting line, which is the last circuit, and is also the finishing line.
But others kept their eyes on the prize and that was enough to spur them on till the finishing line.
Just as expected, the true champions were seperated from the ordinary participants at the end of the day!
The marathon is a long-distance running event with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes and run as a road race. The event that originated from Greece but now considered as among the most patronized sports event in human history.
The 2016 NUIST Winter Marathon, seventh to be held in NUIST with a stated distance of 7 kilometres – although fall short of the standard distance of 42.195 Kilometers adopted by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAF).
Once again it was a feather in the cap, as CIS emerged as the Number 1 College in the NUIST inter-colleges ranking. First top 10 finishers in boys's and girl's marathons were awarded with money, a set of medals and certificates. The first top 80 were also awarded with certificates and a medal from NUIST. All entrants within the closing time were issued with souvenirs and certificates.
