But Mr. Trump said his intervention had helped reduce the toll. Democratic critics of the White House have highlighted what they say is Mr. Trump's ineffectual response. The US House speaker Nancy Pelosi said much of the devastation could have been prevented. This was preventable, not all of it, but much of it. What could be lost in the future is preventable too, if we embrace science, science instead of politics.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has used a national television address to call for a spirit of togetherness, urging people to observe the new rules he's bringing into combat the rapid rise in coronavirus infections. He said that breaches of previous restrictions by what he turned freedom-loving Britons had helped the virus return. With more, here's Jonathan Blake. For the 3rd time during the coronavirus pandemic, Boris Johnson addressed the nation from Downing Street, this time with grave warnings about the renewed threat posed by COVID-19. His tone was uncompromising. Although he said this was a struggle humanity could win, gone was the previous optimism of normality by Christmas or turning the tide within weeks. With tougher restrictions would come tougher enforcement. MR. Johnson said new fines and more police on the streets. If new rules weren't followed, he warned, the government could go further, meaning renewed loneliness and confinement for the elderly and vulnerable and a threat to children's education. The Brazilian government has given the go-ahead for a return of football fans to stadiums. The Health Ministry said grounds could only be 30% full, but that could be increased. The move can be vetoed by city authorities. Candace Piette reports. Little gets between a Brazilian football fan and his passion for the game even in a pandemic. There's been months of pressure on the Brazilian Football Federation to allow fans back into the stadiums. In July, the Rio mayor said he wanted the city's football grounds to reopen to help reduce the crowds on the beaches. But Brazilian players have been resistant. Although the national championship has gone ahead, they've been protests from some teams and clubs have been struggling to keep players virus free. Several matches have been cancelled minutes before kick off because players tested positive.

The authorities in Australia say a further 200 whales have become stranded off Tasmania, taking the total number of beached cetaceans to 470. The second group of whales was found during an aerial reconnaissance. Rescuers say most of them were already dead. They're still trying to free surviving members of the 270 stranded original pot found in shallow waters on Monday. BBC News.
