Providing enough exercise and mentalstimulation. English Springer Spaniels MUST have regular opportunities tovent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will becomerambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and destructivechewing. Bored English Springers can make a shambles of your house and yard.
Separation anxiety. Spaniels need agreat deal of companionship and do not like being left alone for more than afew hours. They tend to express their unhappiness through destructive chewingand barking.
Providing enoughsocialization. English Springer Spaniels need extensive exposure to peopleand to unusual sights and sounds. Obedience instructors see too many EnglishSpringer Spaniels who are fearful or suspicious -- or downright aggressive.
Dominance/aggression. Some EnglishSpringer Spaniels develop a serious temperament disorder that causes suddenflare-ups of extreme dominance or aggression. This disorder appears suddenlyand apparently out of the blue in a previously-normal Springer. The cause isunknown, though some studies have suggested a link to brain seizures.
Grooming. To keep their silky coatfree of mats, English Springer Spaniels require regular brushing, and alsoclipping and trimming every couple of months.
Shedding. English Springer Spanielsshed quite a bit, on the high side of average.
Health problems. From hip problemsto eye problems to metabolic diseases, English Springer Spaniels are risky inthe health department.
