WELCOME MESSAGE
Dear Colleagues and Friends:
Prof. John A.Hudson of the UK (President of the ISRM 2007-2011), Professor Xia-Ting Feng(President of the ISRM 2011–2015), and Prof. Ning Li (President of the SXRSME2001–2016 ) look forward to welcoming you to the first GEOSAFE Symposium beingheld in Xi』an, China, 25-27, May 2016. The Symposium is sponsored by theInternational Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM), the Chinese Society for RockMechanics and Engineering (CSRME) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The reason forholding the Symposium is to develop methods for improving safety in rockengineering construction—through the three aspects of site investigation, modelling and construction procedures. The emphasis will be on improving ourknowledge of these three aspects so that the risks can be reduced. We welcomepapers describing developments in all aspects of rock mechanics and rock engineering.

Xi'anMetro is a rapid transit system being developed in the city of Xi'an, ShaanxiProvince, China. A large number of ground fissures, Conservation of historicbuildings and the collapsibility of loess layer, are the key issues during theconstruction.
Theseactive ground fissures make a serious threat on Xi'anmetro construction, so it is very great and important challenge for Xi'an metro to go throughthese active ground fissures. Some specialized measurements are coming into useto deal with the influence of the ground fissures.
