5 killed in blaze at Indian producer of COVID-19 vaccine

At least five people were killed in a fire that broke out Thursday at a building under construction at Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, officials said. The company said the blaze would not affect production of the COVID-19 vaccine. The company said the fire was restricted to a new facility it is constructing to increase the production of COVID-19 vaccines. It said the fire did not affect existing facilities making COVID-19 vaccines or a stockpile of around 50 million doses.

India is considering raising import duties by 5%-10% on more than 50 items including smartphones, electronic components and appliances in the upcoming budget, three government sources prior to the discussions told Reuters on Monday. The move to increase import duties is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s self-reliant India campaign that aims to promote and support domestic manufacturing, said the sources. Ssources also said the duty increases could impact furniture and electric vehicles, potentially hurting the likes of Swedish furniture maker Ikea and Tesla, which is planning to launch its cars in India this year.

India begins supply of Covid-19 vaccines to six partner neighbouring nations

India on Wednesday started the supply of COVID-19 vaccines under grant assistance to Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Seychelles. First consignment of 1.5 lakh dosages of Covishield vaccine dispatched from Mumbai to Thimphu in Bhutan. The Ministry of External Affairs said India will supply COVID-19 vaccines to partner countries over the coming weeks and months in a phased manner keeping in view the domestic requirements.

A total of 4,54,049 beneficiaries have so far been vaccinated against Covid-19 in the country which is more than double the number of coronavirus active cases, the Indian Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday. Addressing a press conference, NITI Aayog member V K Paul said that concerns about adverse effects and serious problems post immunisation as of now seem to be unfounded, negligible, insignificant and as low as 0.18%. He also stressed that both the authorised vaccines; covishield and covaxin are safe.

Delhi's Red Fort closed till Republic Day after bird flu found in dead crow

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) closed the Red Fort to visitors on Tuesday after a sample taken from dead crows found on the premises tested positive for bird flu. The sample was sent for testing to the Animal Husbandry Unit of the Delhi government’s Development Department. Fifteen crows had died there and one was sent as a sample for testing. So far a total of 24 samples from nine locations in the city have tested positive for bird flu.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said he was extremely anguished over the road accident in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the incident. Fourteen members, including four children, of a marriage party on Tuesday were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between a stone-laden truck and their three vehicles. Two other vehicles coming from the wrong side collided into the body of the truck due to which boulders loaded in the vehicle fell on them.

Swiggy shuts down its grocery marketplace operations

Bengaluru-headquartered food-tech unicorn Swiggy, has reportedly shut down its online grocery marketplace and plans to replace it with 『Instamart』, an instant delivery service for groceries and other household items, fulfilled through a network of dark stores. According to Entrackr, which first reported the development, Swiggy plans to scale up Instamart, currently available in Bengaluru and Gurugram, as it offers better margins compared to the marketplace one. The company plans to expand Instamart to multiple cities to challenge the bigger players in the grocery delivery segment such as Bigbasket, Reliance-owned JioMart, Grofers, Flipkart SuperMart, Amazon Fresh among others.

Government of Gujrat renames 'Lotus-shaped' dragon fruit as 'Kamalam', Denies any political implication

The Gujarat government’s move to rename dragon fruit as 『Kamalam』, since according to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani the fruit’s outer shape resembles a lotus, has internet and social media platforms posting comments ridiculing the decision. The ruling party in Gujarat and in the country BJP’s election symbol is lotus and Gujarat BJP’s sprawling headquarters on Ahmedabad Gandhinagar highway is named Shri Kamalam but Chief Minister emphasised that change of nomenclature of the fruit was a non-political move. India's stand-up comedians, journalists and social media influencer groups found the changing of the name amusing, prompting them to flood the social media with memes and emojis.
