The second in our series of deep dives into the Concrete & Grass 2016 lineup. In this edition, how to break 'World Music'.
The term 'World Music' is one that’s always confused us…it’s always struck us as a little pointless. All music is of this world (except maybe Ben UFO, who aspires to the extra-terrestrial), and the term is often used to bundle together sounds that fit old stereotypes and outdated images of what certain places and people supposedly sound like.
These four artists below have a different view. They take what we might call 'traditional' sounds only to drag them in to the contemporary world. These artists both draw on storied folk traditions and break with them – often with spectacular results.
Let’s meet them.

What 『world music』 should sound like. A searing blend of drone, metal and traditional Korean instruments
Jambinai
[Most] people expect Asian traditional music to make something smooth」, say Jambinai.
「[Something] for yoga or meditation. We want to break all of that."
And break it they do.
(Sputnik Music)
Ilwoo, Eun Youg and Bomi take the traditional sounds of a geomungo (a bass-like zither), a heagum (an old-school fiddle) and a piri (a Korean oboe), only to twist them to the service of propulsive, meditative rock.
It’s 「massive, visceral.」 (Consequence of Sound). 「Thrilling, unexpected and perfectly controlled.」 (The Guardian). Their signature song, 'They Keep Silence' moves from pained ghost whisper to explosive metal riff in under seven minutes.
On stage, Ilwoo switches his piri for a black Ibanez guitar. The geomungo rattles with coiled-up energy. An even drone keeps time above the maelstrom. Acoustic noodling gives away to bursts of furious energy.
The "yoga" session becomes martial arts.
Jambinai’s debut album, Différance, was released in 2012. It’s won them universal acclaim, and a Korean Music Award for 『best crossover album』. Their long-awaited follow up, A Hermitage, was released in June 2016. They』ve taken their sounds to some of the top festivals in the world, from Glastonbury and Primavera to Roskilde and SxSW. And now Concrete & Grass.
Highly recommended for adventurous music listeners. Bringing in the sunset on Friday.
Enigmatic dance noir – warped pop mantras rooted in deep spirituality
Aïsha Devi
Aïsha Devi prefers dark realms.
Her work exists on the fringes of dance music, channeling its oft-sidelined primordial, ritual function.
Strange, meditative, deeply spiritual – these are club bangers that walk the path of weirdness.
Here’s her debut EP, Aura 4 Everyone, released via her experimental label Danse Noire. It’s full of boundary-blurring, abstracted techno/club structures and Devi’s exploration of her Nepalese-Tibetan heritage, using her machines to transmute deep meditation.
Her debut LP, Of Matter and Spirit, was released October 2015. Her live set at Concrete & Grass will transcend both.
Keeping it weird in the Yurt, late Saturday.

Sparse, delicate traditional folk that rings with the songs and stories of the Menba people
Yunggie Ma
Music that sweeps through time and history, and the stories of an ancient people.
Yunggie Ma is a singer from the Menba minority, who emigrated from Bhutan to the Southeast region of Tibet over 300 years ago. Her music is the tale of her people, passed down through generations. It’s an elegy for a lost way of life, and a defiant faith that another world is possible.
Hers is a rare talent; her extraordinary voice possesses a distinct, striking purity. "The mountain woods listen to her sing and answer with gentle quivering wind," wrote one Chinese reviewer about her debut album, 2016’s Lament for the World of Suffering: The Sacred Land of the Lotus.
Her performances evoke another world; vocal melodies ring with the sound of the distant chants of Tibetan temples, and conjure images of the restless Menba roaming through bustling modern streets.
Yunnggie Ma first shot to fame through her participation in 「Chinese Idol」 2013. Her songs went viral online, rapturously received, and quickly established her as a household name. Along with her folk roots, one can hear an unspoken affection for Tuvan avant-folk singer Sainkho Namtchylak, Portishead, Massive Attack and PJ Harvey in her music.
Yunggie Ma's repertoire features both sparse, traditional arrangements and modern beats. Live, her songs sound strikingly contemporary, yet resonant with the intimate tales of the elders of the Menba clans.
Nice and mellow on the main stage. Friday afternoon.
