#U.S. Presidents# (#39) James Carter (1977-1981)
James (「Jimmy」) Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.
In foreign affairs, building upon the work of predecessors, he established full diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. On December 15, 1978, when, following months of secret negotiations, the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) announced that they would recognize one another and establish official diplomatic relations. As part of the agreement, the United States recognized the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China.
There were serious setbacks, however. The seizure as hostages of the U.S. embassy staff in Iran dominated the news during the last 14 months of the administration. He conducted difficult negotiations over the hostages. Iran finally released the 52 Americans the same day Carter left office.
Tomorrow, we will share about the next President - Ronald Reagan. #Presidents of the U.S.#
