上海美國中心嘉賓講座系列旨在帶大家走近美國社會的方方面面。本次講座中,特邀嘉賓 Thomas Bruce將分享他在美國國會工作多年的親身經歷。Bruce在華盛頓工作了30年,曾在眾議院外交事務委員會、美洲國家組織對外關係辦公室任職,在 The Monitor Channel 主持一檔周播的電視節目。講座後設有問答環節,Bruce將就相關話題回答觀眾的提問。
Come to the Shanghai American Center to learn more about the U.S. Congress and hear first-hand stories from Capitol Hill! Guest Speaker Thomas Bruce will give a talk about his 30-year career in Washington, which include serving on the staff of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, working at the Organization of American States as Director of the Office of External Relations, and anchoring a weekly national television show on The Monitor Channel. A Q&A session will follow the talk to give the audience opportunities to engage with the speaker and learn more about this topic.
嘉賓介紹 About the Speaker
Thomas Bruce 目前在上海紐約大學擔任高級顧問。他擔任過大學領導、國會助理、國際公務員、主持人以及公共事務顧問。他曾任職康奈爾大學大學傳播副校長10年之久,擔任過達特茅斯大學公共事務副校長,在華盛頓有過長達30年的工作經驗:曾供職於美國眾議院外交事務委員會,擔任過美洲國家組織對外關係辦公室主任。作為公共事務顧問,Bruce為美國公司管理在歐洲和拉丁美洲的傳播項目,為拉丁美洲政府就與美國政府關係提供諮詢。他策劃、運營過一次為期兩年的全美宣傳推廣活動,在展開長期談判之前,將法國香檳區成功推向全美市場。Bruce 曾在The Monitor Channel上創建並主持了一檔關於全國公共事務的電視節目。
Thomas Bruce is currently serving as the senior counselor at NYU Shanghai. He brings a wide range of experiences as a senior university leader, congressional aide, international civil servant, anchorman, and a public affairs consultant. Prior to becoming vice president for University Communications at Cornell University for a decade and a stint as Dartmouth’s senior vice president for Public Affairs, Bruce led a successful 30-year career in Washington serving on the staff of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, working at the Organization of American States as Director of the Office of External Relations. As a public affairs consultant, Bruce managed communications projects for American companies in Europe and Latin America, advised Latin American governments in Washington, and for two years set up and ran a successful national campaign to position France's Champagne district favorably throughout the United States ahead of long term negotiations. Bruce created and moderated for two years a national public affairs television show on the Monitor Channel.

每年的4月26日是世界智慧財產權日,人們在這一天強調智慧財產權(專利、商標、工業設計、版權等)在鼓勵創新和創造方面的重要性。雖然智慧財產權的標準和實施因國家而異,但智慧財產權,無論如何定義,對於企業家來說——不管其企業規模大小——都至關重要。為了慶祝今年的智慧財產權日,上海美國中心將放映影片《奮鬥的喬伊》(Joy),該片講述的就是一個創新設計如何最終成為一個商業帝國的故事。由詹妮弗·勞倫斯飾演的主人公喬伊原本只是居住在長島的一名普通單身母親,通過自身努力,逐漸成為一名成功的企業家,建立起了龐大的家族企業。
Every April 26, we celebrate World Intellectual PropertyDay to learn about the role that intellectual property rights (patents,trademarks, industrial designs, copyright) play in encouraging innovation andcreativity. While IPR standards and enforcement vary by country, intellectualproperty rights, however defined, are crucial for entrepreneurs, no matter howlarge or small their business. In honor of this year’s World IP Day, theShanghai American Center is hosting this special screening of Joy – a story ofbuilding a business from an innovative idea. Starring Jennifer Lawrence as thetitle character, the movie traces the career of Joy, a Long Island mother whoinvented a mop and rose to become founder and matriarch of a powerful familybusiness dynasty.

This event will be hosted by two IPR subject-matterexperts as guest speakers. Michael Mangelson, Intellectual Property Attaché atthe U.S. Consulate General Shanghai’s U.S. Patent and Trade Office , andWilliam Feng, Vice President for Asia-Pacific and head of Motion PictureAssociation of America (MPAA) in Greater China, will first lead a discussion ofIPR in China, then introduce the film and talk about its IP elements. Followingthe film screening, a brief Q&A session with the guest speakers will concludethe event.

本次活動中,上海美國中心再次請到了英語語言教師(English Language Fellow)來幫助大家提高跨文化溝通能力。活動中,參與者不僅會有鍛鍊口語的機會,也能學到很多跨文化溝通的技巧。第二期的內容會針對跨文化溝通中經常出現的因為不同的溝通風格造成的交流障礙、不同文化在處理衝突時的不同方式、以及中外的禮俗秩序差別等等。
The Shanghai American Center is proud to welcome back Shanghai’s EnglishLanguage Fellow, a language specialist who is here to help you bettercommunicate with your foreign English-speaking friends. Participants inthis workshop will have an opportunity to improve their oral English skills aswell as learn about important intercultural communication skills. Part II ofthis workshop series will focus on overcoming common communication challengesthat result from different communication styles, different ways of dealing withconflict, and differences in rank and power in China and the West.

上海美國中心嘉賓講座系列旨在帶大家走近美國社會的方方面面。本期活動中,我們請到了復旦大學富布賴特研究學者 John Crespi 教授。他會和大家分享自己在中國的多次富布賴特研究學者經歷,如何在機緣巧合下開始研究被一些人認為只是搞笑圖片的漫畫。在Crespi 教授看來,包括一些上海漫畫家在內的漫畫作者實際上通過畫筆,記錄和解釋了很多歷史變化。
As part of our guest lecture series, which explores different elements of American culture, values and society, the Shanghai American Center is proud to host Professor John Crespi, a Fulbright Senior Scholar currently at Fudan University. He will talk about his multiple experiences in China as a prestigious Fulbright scholar, and how it brought him to study cartoons, something many people think of as just funny pictures. Professor Crespi will explain that in fact cartoonists, including Shanghai’s manhua artists, created and published an incredible variety of images that explain many historical changes.

上海美國中心嘉賓講座系列旨在帶大家走近美國社會的方方面面。本期活動中,我們請到了復旦大學的美國教授Shenghai Li來為大家介紹佛教在美國的發展歷史。Shenghai Li 教授是復旦大學中華古籍保護研究院的博士研究員,此前曾在印度作富布賴特研究學者。講座中,他會帶大家回顧佛教在美國的發展歷史——從最初美國對佛教產生興趣到美國佛教在眼下的初期階段呈現的特點,以及其如何受到亞洲佛教宗派的影響等。
As part of our guest lecture series, which explores different elements of American culture, values and society, the Shanghai American Center is proud to host American Professor Shenghai Li for a talk on the history of Buddhism in the United States. Professor Li is a PhD researcher at Fudan University’s Institute for the Study and Preservation of Classical Chinese Books, and was previously a Fulbright Scholar in India. His talk will sketch a historical survey from the earliest expressions of American interest and look at some distinctive elements that have emerged at this early stage of American Buddhism, which features the presence of virtually all major Asian Buddhist denominations.
