作為美國負責起草和通過法案的立法機構，美國的國會採取兩院制：由眾議院和參議院組成。其中，由435名眾議員組成的眾議院是其中規模較大的一個，眾議員總數由國會根據各州人口比例劃分，每個眾議員任期為兩年，這個特點讓眾議院又有「人民議院」之稱。和參議院一樣，眾議院也在起草、辯論和通過法案的過程中起著相當重要的作用，其決定影響著全美國的民眾。在上海美國中心本次的講座中，我們帶大家走近眾議院這個具有特殊重要性的美國立法機構，介紹其歷史和功能，以及歷史上曾經影響過美國社會進程的幾項重要議會辯論。
The U.S. Legislative branch, which drafts and passes bills that may be signedby the President, is divided into 2 governing bodies: The House ofRepresentatives and The Senate. The House of Representatives is by far thelarger of the two, with a total of 435 members, divided based on theproportional population of each of America’s 50 States who are elected every 2years. These frequent elections have led some observers to nickname Congress』lower branch as 「The People’s House」. As with the Senate, it plays a key rolein drafting, debating and passing legislation that affects millions of citizensacross the United States. To explain this key American institution, TheShanghai American Center will host a public lecture to explain its function,its history, and some major debates which have shaped our Nation.

南極洲是地球上最脆弱、最不為人類所了解的生態系統之一。為了走近這個特殊的世界一隅，了解世界各國就南極保護採取的合作，上海美國中心特別請到了海洋資源管理專家卡桑德拉·布魯克斯博士，她多年來一直在研究南極保護。布魯克斯博士會和大家介紹她的獨特經歷，也會和大家分享來自這個地球最遙遠地區的精彩照片和視頻。
Antarctica is one of the most fragile, and least understood ecosystems onplanet earth. To talk about this unique corner of the world, as well asthe international cooperation underway to help protect it, the ShanghaiAmerican Center is proud to welcome Dr. Cassandra Brooks, and expert on marineresource management, who has spent time living in and studyingAntarctica. Her talk will feature stories from her unique experience, aswell as videos and photographs from one of the most remote places onearth.
