「1984年，他們都是死於飢餓，但他們死的基本原因是貧窮。我們知道我們可以控制伊波拉疫情，我們有醫生、護士、藥品和國家制度，我們也有錢。但他們卻因為貧窮又會再死一次，這根本就不能接受。」
1984年版的這首歌曲由像菲爾柯林斯(Phil Collins)、喬治·麥可(George Michael)和斯汀(Sting)等藝術家製作，目的是消除非洲的飢餓，此曲仍是英國第二大單曲。
法新社報告，新歌曲周六會在倫敦西部的薩爾姆錄音棚錄製，與原曲錄製地點一致。 這首歌可以在網上購買，價格為1.60美元，或花6.35美元購買錄音實體。
1989年參與錄製《他們知道這是聖誕節嗎？》單曲的藝術家也參與了2004年的重新錄製過程。
數十位巨星聯合慈善義唱的歌曲，最著名的要屬美國歌手的"We are the world"，但那首歌曲的誕生靈感，卻是源自於英國的這首"Do they know it's Christmas?"。
