據《聖經》記載：
在講到什麼樣的人能進天國時， 他說：「哪些稱呼我 主啊， 主啊的人 並不都能進天國；只有實行我天父旨意的人才能進去。在末日來臨的時候，許多人要對我說：主啊，主啊，我們會奉你的名傳上帝的信息，也曾奉你的名趕許多鬼，行許多奇蹟！那時候，我要對他們說：我從來不認識你們；你們這些作惡的，走開吧！所以，所有聽我這些話而實行的，就像一個聰明人把房子蓋在磐石上；縱使風吹雨打水衝，房子也 不倒塌，因為它的基礎立在磐石上。
可是，那聽見我這些話而不實行的，就像一個愚蠢的人把房子蓋在沙土上，一遭受風吹雨打 水衝，房子就倒塌了，而且倒塌得多麼慘重！」 耶穌講完了以上這些話， 眾人對他的教訓都感到十分驚奇；因為耶穌跟他們的經學教師不同， 他的教訓帶有權威。眾人隨同耶穌一同下了山。
在現代的英語中， 人們用 build on the rock 表示「建立在牢固的基礎之上」；build on the sand 用 表示「建立於不穩固的基礎上」
聖經原文：
凡稱呼我』主啊，主啊』的人，不能都進天國；惟獨遵行我天父旨意的人，才能進去。
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
當那日，必有許多人對我說：』主啊，主啊，我們不是奉你的名傳道，奉你的名趕鬼，奉你的名行許多異能嗎？』
Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?』
我就明明地告訴他們說：』我從來不認識你們，你們這些作惡的人，離開我去吧！』
Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!』
所以，凡聽見我這話就去行的，好比一個聰明人，把房子蓋在磐石上。
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
雨淋，水衝，風吹，撞著那房子，房子總不倒塌，因為根基立在磐石上。
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock
凡聽見我這話不去行的，好比一個無知的人，把房子蓋在沙土上。
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
雨淋，水衝，風吹，撞著那房子，房子就倒塌了，並且倒塌得很大。」
The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.」
耶穌講完了這些話，眾人都希奇他的教訓。
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,
因為他教訓他們，正像有權柄的人，不像他們的文士。
because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
