Six people suspected of making counterfeit jerseys of English Premier League football teams have been detained by police in Hongkou District with more than 30,000 jerseys seized, police said on Thursday.

The amount of money involved exceeded 10 million yuan (US$1.45 million).

Police said that with the International Champions Cup between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur being played on Thursday night at Hongkou Football Stadium, many fans had bought jerseys online in advance.

However, when they received them, at a cost of several hundred yuan each, they were of poor quality and looked fake.

Police said their investigation found that a man surnamed Huang and his accomplices had bought counterfeit jerseys from Guangzhou in Guangdong Province for 25 yuan each and had sold them online as certified products.

The six suspects were caught by police in Guangzhou and are now in detention.
