A large number of dead fish were found floating on the water near Houhai Bridge in Shenzhen Bay on Aug. 14, causing environmental and safety concerns among local residents.

Workers of nearby parks said the dead fish were from Shenzhen Bay Inland Lake Park, which is still under construction. Opinions vary on what caused the death of such a large quantity of fish.

On one side of Houhai Bridge is Shenzhen Bay and on the other is Shenzhen Bay Inland Lake Park, which used to be an F1 motorboat racing field.
後海大橋一側是深圳灣，而另一側為原F1摩託艇賽場，現為正在建設中的深圳灣內湖公園。
Some residents suspect that park construction has polluted the sea and caused fish to die. A security guard of the inland lake park said someone may have discharged wastewater secretly from a sewage outlet at the northwest corner of the park, since there is an obvious stench there.
一些居民認為死魚突然出現，可能與內湖公園施工有關。一名內湖公園保安員則表示，內湖公園西北角有排汙口，排汙口水體明顯有異味，可能有人偷排汙水。
The head of the park’s security guard force, a man surnamed Zou, said that sultry weather, rather than water pollution, killed the fish.
內湖公園保安隊鄒隊長表示，魚死還是與悶熱的天氣有關，不是水質受汙染。
「It’s stuffy and hot recently and the water in the inland park is flowing poorly, reducing the amount of oxygen in the water,」 he said. 「Many small fish died of oxygen deficiency.」
鄒隊長說，「近期天氣悶，陣雨頻頻，內湖公園的水流動性差一些，因而水中氧氣不足，生命力差一點的小魚大量死亡。」
Zou said the sewage outlet at the northwest corner used to be the water inlet of the motorboat racing field and it has been used to discharge lake water that flowed into the construction site.

Some people said the water gate between the inland lake and Shenzhen Bay might have been shut down for construction, which prevented water flow. Zou explained that the gate is only closed temporarily when a drilling operation in the lake requires it.
也有市民分析，後海大橋下的水閘，之前因內湖公園施工被關上，水閘關閉後，內湖公園與深圳灣的水無法交換。對此，鄒隊長回應，水閘一般都沒關，但有時施工需要到湖中鑽探，鑽探平臺要有足夠水位才能作業，這時候才會關上。
Dead fish, however, have raised widespread concerns among local residents. They extended a few hundred square meters in the sea near Houhai Bridge, which was 「startling to see,」 according to a resident surnamed Li.
市民李先生表示，深圳灣海域出現大面積死魚令人驚訝。
He added that he also saw some people take boats to retrieve dead fish Aug. 14 and was worried whether they would be sold on the market, eventually becoming dishes on people’s dining tables.
他還表示，這些死魚可不能流入市場。
Zou said his team retrieved hundreds of kilograms of dead fish Thursday and promised they won’t be sold on the market.

It remains unclear why the authorities did not conduct an environmental assessment beforehand or following the incident. A Sina Weibo user named 「Jianzhenchengzhang」 said: 「Controlling water pollution to protect Shenzhen Bay is a matter that admits no delay.」

Large quantities of dead fish have been spotted along the coastline of Shenzhen Bay several times since last year.
