A top Chinese regional officer has said that some Communist Party officials have supported attacks in Xinjiang, a province in north eastern China which is constantly under violent unrest.
Xinjiang is mainly home to people of the Muslim Uighur ethnic minority. There are problems between residents and the government - the former complain of discrimination and unfair controls on their ethnic culture and beliefs, whereas the latter blame Islamist separatists for the extreme violence which dictates treatment for them all.
Xu Hairong is Xinjiangs highest ranking anti-graft official, and he has recently declared that local party members have participated in the violence and unrest.
Xu said in a statement to China Discipline Inspection News that "some communist cadres... even support or take part in violent terrorist attacks."
While he did not elaborate, and no exact details were given, he maintained that officials have been 「wavering on the big issues of opposing anti-separatism and maintaining ethnic unity.」
The statements draw light to the ongoing issues in Xinjiang, where in recent times, violence has only escalated.
