:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::When God interrupts your life with His glory and you enthusiastically turn in His direction to follow, you will be transformed.
The night-shift interruptedWorking late nights, living outdoors leading and protecting a flock of sheep, shepherds were common laborers. Hardly the kind of people you would entrust with proclaiming the news of the birth of a king. But they were the ones that God chose. They were on duty guarding their sheep when their normal schedule was totally interrupted by heaven coming to earth. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, 「Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.」 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 「Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.」 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, 「Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.」
Why announce to obscure shepherds? Why would God choose common shepherds to make such a glorious birth announcement? Why not announce to the most influential people in society such as royalty, scholars or successful business leaders? Why not share this amazing news with the major influencers of the day? How were these shepherds supposed to broadcast this royal news? In the eyes of the world, the work of the shepherd was a common job. But to God, the shepherd had great value. Jacob’s 12 sons were shepherds, young David was a shepherd and Jesus Christ is our Good Shepherd who shepherds His people. We are the sheep of His pasture. So it seems that God has a soft spot for shepherds and it was only fitting that it was to shepherds that He sent the heavenly host to announce the birth of Jesus Christ. The one who would become the Great Shepherd who would lay down His life for His sheep. These rugged shepherds were terrified by the celestial army but their fear did not paralyze them. As soon as they heard the good news of the great joy of salvation, they were inspired to action. Their work as shepherds was eclipsed by this amazing announcement and they had to go. There was no discussion about what to do with the sheep. Their normal work was put on hold, and they were compelled to find the child. When the shepherds received the revelation of the birth of Christ, they were changed – they left earthly things behind to pursue spiritual things. Are you compelled by spiritual things as well? God might not speak to you through an angel choir, but you have the voice of the Good Shepherd leading you through His Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As you learn to tune your ears to the call of the shepherd, the call of earthly things will have less of a pull on you. You will be ready to go and follow God’s call just like the shepherds. You will not be concerned about the interruption of your professional life for the sake of pursuing God’s leading. You will become like the shepherds who left their sheep behind and immediately went in search of Jesus. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
Luke 2:16-20 NIV
2:16-20The shepherds not only found Jesus, but they became proclaimers of the gospel and worshippers. Everyone who heard the news from the shepherds were amazed. As the shepherds embraced God’s interruption of their night-shift, they were transformed from obscure workers to evangelists and worship leaders. This is the power of God in us as we enthusiastically follow God’s glorious plan for our lives. We are transformed into His messengers and worshippers. When was the last time you allowed your life to be interrupted by the voice of the Good Shepherd calling to you? Did you follow and obey Him, setting aside your own agenda, plans and needs? We can learn from the shepherds』 instant and very robust response to God speaking to them. As they threw themselves into the Lord’s work, they met the Savior face to face, led others to Him, glorified His name and they were transformed. Maybe one of the reasons God chose the shepherds to be the first carriers of the Good News was because they had learned through their work how good it was for a sheep to trust and follow a good shepherd. Let us do likewise this Christmas season and allow our lives to be interrupted by God to pursue Jesus Christ, proclaim His name to others and worship Him as the Savior of the World, the Great Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep.
