Duan, Peng out in first round; Hsieh Suwei stunns Konta
In tennis,
Both Duan Yingying and Peng Shuai have been dealt straight-sets defeats in the first round of the French Open.
Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei produced a shocker by stunning British number one Johanna Konta in 3 sets.
Hsieh found her groove after a 6-1 first set loss.
Konta, the overall 7th seed, says Hsieh surprised her with her consistency in the next two sets.
"I think I definitely created some opportunities. I think I didn't do well enough in necessarily converting them. But then there were times where I felt that she did play incredibly well. And, I mean, there were some points there where I didn't do much wrong, and she really was, she surprised me with actually how well she moved on the clay and also how solid she was. You know, everyone knows she's a very talented player and she's got great feel, but I think she was incredibly solid today, so that made it very tough to play her."
Hsieh leaves Konta still winless in the main draw at Roland Garros.
On the men's side,
Italian Open winner Alexander Zverev has been knocked out from the first round.
Zverev was doing well before his match against Fernando Verdasco was postponed due to failing light.
Zverev says he struggled to get back into form after the match resumed.
"He played very well. He played very smart as well. Tried to push me back a lot, which he did. And I didn't feel the ball on my racquet very well, so I played very short and very defensive all the time, which with my game and with my body, it's not easy to do."
There were no other big upsets in men's action.
Nick Kyrgios made it past Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets, Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka, and Gael Monfils are all safely through.
