1.rather than用作連詞
rather than用作連詞，其後的成分表示否定概念，意為「與其……不如，寧可……而不，不是……而是」，後面可以接名詞、名詞短語、代詞、形容詞、副詞、動詞、不定式、動名詞等。
（1）接名詞
He is a writer rather than a teacher. 與其說他是教師，不如說他是作家。
（2）接代詞
I，rather than you，should take the responsibility. 該負責的是我，而不是你。
（3）接形容詞
The colour seems green rather than blue. 這顏色似乎是藍的，而不是綠的。
（4）接副詞
The ship sank quickly rather than slowly. 船沉得很快，而非很慢。
（5）接動詞（表示對客觀情況的否定）
He ran rather than walked. 他跑著，不是走著。
（6）接不帶to的不定式（通常表示主觀上不願意幹什麼）
Rather than cause trouble，he went away. 他寧願走開，而不願惹麻煩。
He wanted to swim rather than play games. 他想去遊泳，不想去打遊戲。
（7）接介詞短語
They relied mainly on themselves rather than on outside help. 他們主要依靠自己，而不是依靠外界的幫助。
（8）接分詞
It is snowing rather than raining outside. 外面在下雪，而不是在下雨。
She is laughing rather than crying. 她在笑，而不是在哭。
（9）接動名詞
Rather than regretting for the failure，why not try again? 與其為失敗而後悔，為什麼不再試一次呢？
（10）接句子
It's what he meant rather than what he said. 是他的意思，話倒沒有這麼說。
He asked me how I found the hole rather than how I escaped. 他問我是怎麼發現這個洞的，而不是問我是怎樣逃出來的。
注意：有時，rather than後接不帶to的不定式或動名詞均可。
You should go your own way，rather than follow(/following)their foodsteps.
2.rather…than…意為「寧願……而不，與其說……還不如說」，rather後的成分表示肯定概念，than後的成分表示否定概念。
I would rather you settle the problem in private than by low. 我寧願你把這件事私下了結，而不要去訴諸法律。
