其實英語單詞跟漢語一樣是有偏旁部首的，只要記住它們，遇到不會的單詞就可以猜，所以要記的東西就大大減少了。這些偏旁部首就是詞根詞綴，因為英語融合了各種語言，比如希臘語、拉丁語、法語、德語，所以詞根也來自不同的語言，根據詞根在源語言中的意思來解釋英語單詞意思的方法叫詞源學。按照詞源學記單詞又快又有意思。
今天是聖誕節Christmas，用來慶祝耶穌的誕生，我們先從詞源學看一下Christmas到底是什麼意思，再來學學mass這個詞。
Christmas詞源意思
Christ（基督）這個詞來源於中古英語單詞Crist，意思是受膏者，主的受膏者。Crist是從拉丁詞Christus和希臘詞Khrīstos中借來的，這兩個詞都有「受膏者」的意思。希臘詞Khrīstos是希伯來語Messiah的翻譯，意思是受膏的主或彌賽亞。
Christmas的第二部分mas有三種解釋，都有聚在一起慶祝的意思。
第一種：mas即mass，來自於古法語masse，意思為「大塊，群體，大量」，以及拉丁語massa，意思為「揉的麵團或者像麵團一樣粘在一起的塊狀物」，這個詞後來慢慢演變為大量、集會。第二種：mas即maesse是拉丁詞missa（彌撒）的變體，彌撒是個慶祝儀式，信徒們聚在一起通過吃聖餐麵包和喝葡萄酒紀念耶穌。第三種：後綴-mas由古英語單詞maesse演變而來，意思是節日或聚會（又譯彌撒）。
