The Stream
LU Yi Translated by SHI Zhikang
We walked hand in hand into the woods, where the stream seemed to greet our floating reflections upon the water with her smiling dimples. The stream, tender as a lovely girl, somehow found herself in the deep forest, her body imprisoned in the heavy greens.
So she was unable to flash a cheerful smile to the rosy sun early in the morning, or have a pleasant chat with the rippling moon deep at night. Her crystal eyes were by soft degrees tinted with deep blue melancholy and she appeared so depressed, with gloomy groans time and again. It was in the season of summer.
After several autumn rains, the stream went up by some boat poles; the green leaves fell off the withered parasols and catalpas; the golden evening glow filtered through branches of the trees into the stream; the indigo water surface was suffused with a rainbow of colors.
Now the stream regained her vivacity and mirth, going hastily forwards, playing mischievously along the way with dead leaves and withered branches.
A small red leaf followed the advice of the smooth-talking west wind and left the school for fun on the quiet. Alas, the wind stealthily took back its carrying power midway and the leaf stumbled into the stream.
At a high point of ecstasy, the subtle stream proceeded to lead the poor stray leaf by push and jam into the whirlpool, where it encircled, unable to move forwards or backwards, and was reduced to the verge of tears. The water let loose the leaf with a playful smile and it lost no time in running away.
So the stream was wont to tease others, but she herself encountered obstacles when she came to the dam. If your memory does not fail you, you must remember there sat many huge stones at the bottom of the dam, blocking the way of the running stream.
When she first came to the stones, the carefree cheeky stream importuned the stones to let her pass, with crafty pettishness and craziness. However, the stones remained inflexible, with a cold long face, as if deaf. Then she flew into a rage, and dashed desperately upon the stones. In her fierce conflict with the stones, she broke the light blue gauze and exposed her snow-white bosom, as if gasping for breath and roaring with anger, with silver locks floating into all directions.
Pit-a-pat, female slaps constantly fell upon the deeply wrinkled cheeks of the stones---she was in genuine anger rather than feigned displeasure.
Who says that the stones could not melt his stubbornness? The slaps were just too merciless and the stones were forced to duck. So the stream went over the obstacles, safe and sound.
Triumphant as she was, she felt tremendously worn-out. She dragged away, with her light blue gauze loosely upon her, leaving on-and-off gasps all the way along.
Whenever we came to the woods, we would sit and watch the wrangle between the stream and the stones, for as long as an hour or two.
