近日,美國總統川普在採訪中再爆「金句」,一句「It is what it is」(情況就是這樣)引發廣泛吐槽。
當地時間8月3日,在接受Axios on HBO節目主持人喬納森·斯旺採訪時,川普堅稱,美國疫情盡在控制之中(it's under control)。
對此,主持人反問,每天死1000多名美國人,這也能叫「控制」?
"How? A thousand Americans are dying a day," Swan said.
「怎麼就在控制下了?每天有1000多名美國人在死去。」
面對主持人的反問,川普用五個字進行了回應——「It is what it is」(情況就這樣)……
"They are dying, that's true. And it is what it is," Trump said. "But that doesn't mean we aren't doing everything we can. It's under control, as much as you can control it."
川普這句「It is what it is」一出口,立刻引發廣泛吐槽。
CNN主持人安德森·庫珀表示被川普這番言論「震驚了」(astonished),他在當地時間5日的節目中對此進行了一番犀利點評:
It is what it is. It would be a cruel and heartless thing to say, if it came from any individual. But it didn't. It came from the most powerful office-holder in the world.
情況就這樣。即便是一個普通人說出這樣的話,都顯得很殘酷無情。但說這話的並不是普通人,而是世界上最有權勢的國家領導人。
他無不諷刺地說,「情況就這樣了,還能怎麼辦……」(It is what it is. What are you gonna do?)
這句話為何令人反感?
川普說的「It is what it is」為何會引發普遍反感呢?這還要從這句話的意思和實際用法說起。
Urban Dictionary網站對這一短語解釋為:「看似只是說了顯而易見的事兒,實則傳遞出了一種無能為力。」
A phrase that seems to simply state the obvious but actually implies helplessness.
Dictionary.com網站解釋稱,「It is what it is」用來形容「人們認為無法改變,只能接受的令人失望或頗具挑戰的局面。」
It is what it is is an expression used to characterize a frustrating or challenging situation that a person believes cannot be changed and must just be accepted.
看了上面兩個詞典的解釋,也就更能理解為什麼川普在談論美國疫情死亡人數時,一句「It is what it is」會引發廣泛吐槽了吧。
「It is what it is」怎麼來的?
It is what it is究竟起源於何時何種情況下並不能確定,但根據《紐約時報》,該短語最早有記載的使用是在上世紀40年代末。
當時J.E. Lawrence在文章中用「It is what it is」描述內布拉斯加州在美國邊疆開發時期(frontier-era)所面臨的困難:
New land is harsh, and vigorous, and sturdy. It scorns evidence of weakness. There is nothing of sham or hypocrisy in it. It is what it is, without apology.
新土地是艱苦、充滿活力且強健的。它蔑視一切軟弱的證據。這片土地上沒有佯裝和虛偽。就是這樣的情況,沒有任何歉意。
進入21世紀以後來,It is what it is越來越流行。
2004年《今日美國》上的一篇文章指出,這句話成為體育領域談論比賽失利時的流行語。
A 2004 USA Today article by Gary Mihoces, titled 「It is what it is,」 pointed out that the phrase had become popular in sports about losses.
也是在2004年,這句話出現在了政治領域。當年大選日,面對競爭對手克裡票數領先的情況,時任美國總統小布希告訴助手:「It is what it is」(就這樣了)。不過後來,小布希成功連任。
It is what it is was noted in politics in 2004, when, according to The New York Times, President George W. Bush responded to an aide telling him his opponent John Kerry was leading the polls with, "It is what it is."
這個表達除了在體育、政治領域被經常使用外,也在商業、軍事、心理學等方面也有著廣泛使用。甚至有歌曲和電影以該短語做名稱。
Besides sports and politics, it is what it is has also seen exhaustive use in business, the military, and psychology. It's also titled songs and even a 2001 film.
Dictionary.com就總結說,從各類語境來看,「It is what it is」被視作「口頭聳肩」,傳遞出一種面對無法改變局面,就聽天由命接受的信號。
Throughout these contexts, it is what it is is used as a kind of verbal shrug signaling resigned acceptance of an unchangeable situation.
一般情況來說,當人們認為真實情況太困難或非常耗時,就會拿這句話當藉口。
Often times, according to critics of it is what it is, the phrase is used as an excuse by people who think the real solution is too difficult or time-consuming…
當然語言也不斷發展,具體的意思還是要放到相應的語境中去理解。
小夥伴們不妨在評論區用「It is what it is」來造句試試吧。
