Stonehenge is a monument made up of giant stones on a plain in southern England. Scientists say it was built in several stages between 5,000 and 3,000 years ago, but why and how it was done remains a mystery.
It was made up of 30 upright stones, of which only 17 are now standing. Each stone is about 4 metres tall and weighs 26 tons. They stood in a circle, with 30 more stones lying on top to form a ring of rocks. There is also an inner circle built with similar stones.
Although the design and engineering is highly developed, Stonehenge was built even without the use of animals to carry the rock and shaped using stone tools. Nobody knows how or why it was built so many miles away from the place where the stones came.
There are many theories as to why it was built: many people say human sacrifices(祭祀) were performed there while some believe it was a burial ground. Others just think it was a special place for looking at the stars. Or maybe it was built by aliens...
