About two hundred years ago

a boy named Sam Brown
lived with his parents on a farm
in Lexington, Massachusetts, near Boston.
At that time, America was not a country of its own.

It belonged to England.

大約兩百年前，

一個叫薩姆·布朗的男孩和他的父母住在

麻薩諸塞州萊剋星敦的一個農場裡，靠近波士頓。

當時，美國還不是獨立的國家，而是屬於英國的。

The farm was small,
and the earth was rocky.

 農場很小，土地上到處都是巖石。

Sam and his father did most
of the outdoor work together.

薩姆和他父親一起承擔了大部分戶外工作。

Sam's mother worked indoors.

Everything they needed, 

they had to make or grow
or cook for themselves.

 薩姆的母親在家裡工作，

都得自己製作、種植或做飯。

Once, in Boston,
Sam and his father saw the soldiers
the British King had sent to keep order.
The people were unhappy
with the way things were being run.

 有一次，在波士頓，薩姆和他的父親

看到了英國國王派來維持秩序的士兵。

人們對事情的管理方式感到不滿。

Sometimes they had riots.
Some people hid guns and powder
in case of trouble with the soldiers.
They didn't like the soldiers much.

They called them Lobster Backs
because of their red coats.

 有時他們會發生騷亂。

有些人把槍和火藥藏起來，以防與士兵鬧事。

他們不喜歡士兵，他們叫他們龍蝦背，

因為他們穿著紅色的外套。

On their way home, Sam asked,
"What do these soldiers want?"

"They want to keep us from being too strong,"
his father said.
"They are afraid of us."
"That makes us even," said Sam.
"I'm afraid of them."

 在回家的路上，薩姆問，「這些士兵們想幹嘛？」

「他們不想讓我們變得太強壯，」父親說，

「他們害怕我們。」

「這讓我們扯平了，」薩姆說，「我也害怕他們。」

One night in early spring
Sam was awakened by the sound of 

church bells ringing.

"What's this?"he thought.
"It can't beSunday yet!"

 早春的一天晚上，薩姆被教堂鐘聲吵醒了。

「這是什麼？」他想，「現在還不可能是星期天！」

He went to the window.
In the darkness
he could see men running.
They seemed to come from everywhere.

 他走到窗前。

在黑暗中，他可以看到人們在奔跑。

他們似乎來自世界各地。

He heard the voices of his father and his mother.

His mother sounded frightened.
Sam knew there was trouble.

 他聽到父親和母親的聲音，母親聽起來很害怕。

He dressed quickly and went downstairs.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"Go back to bed," his mother said.
"No," said his father.
"We need everyone we can get."
His father was a Minuteman,

which meant he had to be ready for

 trouble at a minute's notice.
"Get your gun, Sam," he said.

"Why?" asked Sam. "What's happening?"

 他快速穿好，下樓去了。

「到底怎麼回事？」他問。

「回床上去，」他的母親說，

「不，」他的父親說，「我們需要所有能找到的人。」

他的父親是一名民兵，

這意味著他必須隨時準備面對麻煩。

「拿上你的槍，薩姆，」他說。

「為什麼？」薩姆問，「出什麼事了？」

"Nobody knows for sure," his father said.
"The British have left Boston and are coming this way."
"Who told you?" asked Sam, hoping it wasn't true.
"Paul Revere," said his father.

"Now get your gun."

 「誰也不確定，」他的父親說，

「英國人已經離開了波士頓，正朝這條路走來。」

「誰告訴你的？」薩姆問，希望這不是真的。

「保羅·裡維爾，」他的父親說，「現在拿上你的槍。」

So Sam got his gun and followed his father

through the darkness to the village green.

 於是薩姆拿起槍，跟著他的父親穿過黑暗，

來到了村莊的綠色地帶。

The bells were still ringing,
and a drum was making a rattling noise.
Sam felt cold and afraid.

 鐘聲還在響，鼓聲隆隆作響。

薩姆感到又冷又怕。

Captain Parker,
the head of the Minutemen,
told them to line up
near the meeting house.
Sam saw his friend John Allen.
John looked the way Sam felt,
which made Sam feel better.

「Why are the British coming?」 Sam asked.
"They want the guns and powder hidden in Concord," said John.

」They have to come past here to get them.「

民兵的首領帕克上尉告訴他們在會議室附近排隊。

薩姆看見了他的朋友約翰·艾倫。

約翰看上去和薩姆一樣，這讓薩姆感覺好多了。

「為什麼英國人來了？」薩姆問。

「他們想把槍和火藥藏在康科德，」約翰說，

「他們必須經過這裡才能拿到它們。」

Slowly, it began to get light.
The drums and the bells stopped.
It was so quiet that Sam could hear the birds

twittering in the trees.
He could smell the apple blossoms

 and feel the wet dew on the grass.

 慢慢地，天開始變亮了。

鼓聲和鐘聲停止了。

這是如此的安靜，薩姆可以聽到鳥在樹上鳴叫。

他能聞到蘋果花的味道，

感受草地上溼漉漉的露水。

"Maybe they won't come, after all,"

he said to John.
"Maybe they'll go another way."

"Maybe," said John. "But not likely."

「也許他們終究不會來了，」他對約翰說，

「也許他們會走另一條路，」

約翰說，「也許吧，但不太可能。」

Then it was daylight,
and the men began to relax.
Some of them even yawned.
Sam's father talked with friends.

Sam and John played games
with a knife in the grass.
Sam wished he had eaten breakfast.

Suddenly John said, "Listen!"

 天亮了，男人們開始放鬆了。

其中一些人甚至打哈欠。

薩姆的父親和朋友聊天。

薩姆和約翰在草地上玩刀子。

薩姆真希望他吃過早餐。

約翰突然說：「聽著！」

 They listened,
and in the distance they could hear
the sound of marching feet.
tramp tramp trampTramp Tramp Tramp
TRAMP TRAMP TRAMP
TRAMP TR AMP TRAMP
and THEN……

 他們聽著，在遠處，

他們能聽到行軍的腳步聲。

然後……

Over the hill and past the tavern
came the soldiers!
They came on and on and on.
Sam could see their red coats and 

the sun glinting on their bayonets.

They looked like a bright river of red.

士兵們翻過小山，經過那酒館，他們來了！

他們來了，來了，來了！

薩姆可以看到他們的紅衣服，

太陽在他們的刺刀上閃閃發光，

他們看上去像一條明亮的紅色河流。

As they came closer,
Captain Parker tried to count them.
There seemed to be a thousand.
And he had only eighty Minutemen.
「There are too many of them,」 he said.

 當他們走近的時候，帕克上尉試著數一數。

看起來有一千人。

他只有八十個民兵。

「他們太多了，」他說。

「We had better move away.」
「I'm all for that,」 said Sam.

「I think I'll get on home.」
「Me too,」 said John.
「There's nothing I can do here.」

「我也是，」約翰說，「我在這裡什麼也做不了。」

Sam and John and their fathers
and the other Minutemen began to move off.
「l'll see you after breakfast,」 Sam said to John.
Then he saw a British officer who was shouting
and waving his sword.
「I wonder what he wants,」 Sam said.

「He told us to disperse,」 said John.

「I'm dispersing as fast as I can,」 said Sam. ,
「He doesn't need to shout.」

 薩姆，約翰和他們的父親，

還有另一個民兵開始離開了。

「早飯後見，」薩姆對約翰說，

然後他看見一位英國軍官在大喊大叫，

揮舞著他的劍。

「我想知道他想要什麼，」薩姆說，

「他叫我們散開，」約翰說。

「我儘可能快地散開。」薩姆說，

「他不需要大喊大叫。」

Then someone, somewhere,
fired a gun -BANG!
" The troops began to shoot.

 然後，某個地方，有人開了一槍！「梆！」

Minutemen fell all around.
「Sam!」 John cried. "I'm hit!"

John held his leg and fell down.

民兵們到處都是。

「薩姆！」約翰哭喊道，「我中彈了！」

 The British officer made his troops stop 

shooting and got them back in line.
He marched them off toward Concord,
leaving eight dead Minutemen.

 這位英國軍官讓他的部隊停止射擊，

讓他們重新排好隊。

他命令他們向康科德進軍，留下八個死去的民兵。

Sam and his father helped John's father take him home.
Sam felt he was having a bad dream.
He saw John's mother crying 

as she put a bandage on his leg.
「How does it feel?」 Sam asked.

「Not too good,」 said John.

 薩姆和他父親幫助約翰的父親帶他回家。

薩姆覺得他在做噩夢。

他看見約翰的母親在給他的腿戴繃帶時哭了。

「感覺如何？」薩姆問，「不太好，」約翰說。

When Sam and his father got to their house,
all Sam's fear changed to anger.

「How did they dare do that?」 he cried.
「If they come back, I'll shoot them—every one!」

薩姆和他父親到了家，所有的恐懼都變得憤怒了，

「他們怎麼敢這樣做呢？」他哭了，

「如果他們回來了，我會殺了他們每一個人！」

"Be quiet," his father said,
washing the grit and powder of his face.
「You may just have that chance.」
「He will not,」 said his mother.
"He doesn't leave this house again."

 「安靜點，」他的父親一邊說，

一邊洗他臉上的砂礫和粉末，

「你可能還有機會。」

「他沒有機會，」他母親說，

「他不會再離開這所房子了。」

Then the bells began to ring again!
The troops were coming back!
「Sam, you stay here!」 said his mother.

然後鐘聲又響了起來！軍隊要回來了！

「薩姆，你待在這裡！」他母親說。

But Sam had already grabbed his gun and run outside.
His father followed close behind.

 但薩姆已經拿起槍跑到外面去了。

他父親緊隨其後。

By  now more farmers had come from all around.
They were shooting at the soldiers as they marched.
They never got in close
but fired from behind rocks and trees.
This worked better than meeting in the open.

 這時，更多的民兵從四面八方趕來了。

他們在行軍時向士兵開槍。

他們從未靠近，而是從巖石和樹木後面開槍。

這比正面對戰見面效果好。

Then more British troops came out from Boston.
For a while the battle was quite heavy.

 然後更多的英國軍隊從波士頓出發。

有一段時間，這場戰鬥相當激烈。

The British troops burned some houses,
but their hearts weren't really in it.

 英軍燒毀了一些房屋，

但他們的心並沒有真正投入其中。

Soon they headed back to Boston,
followed on all sides by the farmers,
whose bullets buzzed about like bees.

 不久，他們回到波士頓，跟著所有的農民，

他們的子彈像蜜蜂一樣嗡嗡作響。

 Late that night
Sam and his father got back home.

The rain was falling gently.

 那天深夜，薩姆和他父親回到了家。

雨輕輕地下著。

「Where have you been?」 Sam's mother said.

「I've been worried sick about you.」 

「你去哪兒了?」薩姆的媽媽問，

「我一直很擔心你。」

But Sam was too tired to answer.

All he wanted to do now was sleep.

No one knew it then,
but that day  was the start

of the American Revolution.

The war lasted eight years.
At the end,
America was a country on its own.

But Sam didn't think of that.

He thought of John and wondered how he was.

 但是薩姆太累了，無法回答。

他現在想做的就是睡覺。

沒人知道那天是美國革命的開始，戰爭持續了八年。

最後，美國成為一個獨立的國家，

但薩姆沒有想到這一點，

他想到了約翰，想知道他怎麼樣了。

And then he slept.

 然後他就睡著了。
