1. first/firstly/first of all 首先，第一
* to introduce the first of several things that you want to say.
一般是指從事物的排列順序上說的「首先，第一」。
例句：
First, put in a coin and then press the button.
First of all, let's clear up the mess.
First of all, I』d like to congratulate all the students…. Lastly, …..（九年P110）
2. at first 起初，開頭
* to talk about what happens in the early stages of an event or experience，in contrast to what happens later.
常含有「起初如何，而以後並非如此」之意，含有一種前後對比的意思。
例句：
Ben could not sleep at first. He finally fell asleep when the wind was…. （八年下P30）
At first, she seemed surprised by my questions.
I had some difficulty at first recalling why we were here.
3. to begin/start with 首先，剛開始
它有兩種含義：
一種相當於first/firstly/first of all，表示順序；
另一種相當於at first，強調一種對比。
例句：
To start with, we haven’t enough money, and secondly we haven’t enough time.
（此句中的to start with相當於first/firstly。）
To start with, it was cloudy and grey, and cloudy days make me sad. （九年P84）
（此句中的to start with相當於at first。）
