二、用法對比分析

大多數人都認為trousers與pants是同義詞，可以互換通用，但實際上它們是有區別的。

trousers在英式英語中表示普通的長外褲；在美式英語中，trousers一般指一種剪裁整齊的長外褲，包含腰帶（waistband）、belt loops（腰帶環）及前飛邊（fly front）等，如下圖。

pants在美式英語的用法與trousers在英式英語的用法一樣，指普通的長外褲；在英式英語中，pants常指內褲（underwear）或短褲（knickers）。所以說，當你對一個美國人說」nice pants」時，他會感謝你的誇獎；但如果你對一個英國人說」nice pants」，這就尷尬了，因為你指的是別人的小內內，甚至讓人誤以為你是在調情，有被人告性騷擾的危險。
