LORD』S DAY 3
Q6. DID GOD CREATE PEOPLE SO WICKED AND PERVERSE?
A. No. God created them good and in his own image, that is, in true righteousness and holiness, so that they might truly know God their creator, love him with all their heart, and live with God in eternal happiness, to praise and glorify him.
Q7. THEN WHERE DOES THIS CORRUPT HUMAN NATURE COME FROM?
A. The fall and disobedience of our first parents, Adam and Eve, in Paradise. This fall has so poisoned our nature that we are all conceived and born in a sinful condition.
Q8. BUT ARE WE SO CORRUPT THAT WE ARE TOTALLY UNABLE TO DO ANY GOOD AND INCLINED TOWARD ALL EVIL?
A. Yes, unless we are born again by the Spirit of God.
FRIDAY
Read Proverbs 17:3 and Genesis 6:5.
3The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold,
and the LORD tests hearts.
5The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
When we compare ourselves to other people, we may look pretty good. God, however, looks at our hearts. Even though we have never murdered anyone, God sees when we hold a deep dislike in our hearts for someone who teases us. Even when we do something very kind and unselfish for someone, God knows when part of our reason for doing it is so that we will look good, to others and to ourselves. Even when we pray, God knows when our minds wander, or when we wish the time would pass more quickly. God sees that even our best actions have sin mixed into them.
That’s why the catechism says we are 「totally unable to do any good.」 Left to ourselves, we are inclined toward evil, even when we do good. Evil draws us like a magnet. We want to do it. This is the sad result of the Fall. Every human ever born (except the Lord Jesus Christ) is born 「inclined toward all evil,」 「totally unable to do any good.」
The good news is that God, in his mercy, does not allow human sin to run wild. He holds sinners back from doing all they could do that is sinful and wicked. If he did not, humans would have destroyed themselves and the world they live in long ago!
