敲黑板！英語中不能直譯的口語短語有這些

在學英語的過程中，經常會出現這樣一種情況，每個單詞都是認識的，但是放在一起就不知道說話者想表達的意思是什麼。

如果出現這樣的情況，同學們就要引起注意了，在英語中並不是所有的單詞都是字對字的翻譯。

通過以下的例子，同學們看看能理解多少：

1. off the table

off 指離開，很容易直譯為「離開桌子」，但其實應理解為「不予討論，不予考慮」。

e.g. I wouldn’t wait too long to accept the offer.

- It might be off the table before you know it.

2. butter up someone

butter 指黃油，這裡用作動詞，所以會被誤認為「給某人塗黃油」，顯然是不正確的。

應理解為「奉承，討好某人」

e.g. If you butter up your father, he may help you.

3. grab a bite

grab 指抓，不是抓著咬一口。應理解為「隨便吃點，墊墊肚子「。

e.g. I don’t have so much time, so let’s grab a bite.

4. your call

不是「你的電話」。應理解為「你說了算」。

e.g. I don’t really care where we go. It’s your call.

5. hear me out

不是「出去聽我說」，應為「聽我說」。

e.g. Just hear me out.

6. You know what

其實就是一個口頭禪「你知道嗎？」，並不是向聽眾真的提問，所以聽眾也無需回答。

e.g. You know what, Alice got the first place.

7. get out of hand

不是「從手中拿走」，而是get out of control，「失控」。

e.g. Listen, this is totally getting out of hand! Okay?

8. stay out of the way

並不是大家理解的「待在路的外面」，而是「別擋道，別礙事」。

e.g. – Do you want me to call?

--No, I』ll do it. You just stick to your job.

-- what is your job?

--Staying out of the way.

9. someone’s wasted

同學們可不能翻譯成「她被浪費了」，它等同於totally drunk，「爛醉如泥」。

e.g. – What’s going on? Phil’s pissed.

-- Monica’s wasted.

10. can’t help doing

不是「不能夠幫助做…」，而是「忍不住，情不自禁」。

e.g. I just can’t help laughing when I see her.​​​
