1. next to 的基本用法

①緊挨著，在…旁邊

He sat next to a pretty girl. I introduced myself to the girl next to me. She sat in the chair next to mine.
她坐在緊靠著我的一張椅子上。He saw a magazine on the table next to him.
他看見他鄰近桌上有一本雜誌。

②僅次於，除…之外

It is the largest city next to London. Next to riding, I like swimming best. The Yellow River is the longest in China next to the Yangtse River. 

③與…相比

Next to her I felt like a fraud.
和她相比，我覺得自己是濫竽充數。Next to Tony, we’re all geniuses.
和託尼相比，我們都是天才。

④幾乎，簡直

It’s next to impossible to drive in this traffic.
在交通這樣擁擠的情況下幾乎無法駕車行駛。Charles knew next to nothing about farming.
查爾斯對耕作幾乎一無所知。The horse came next to last (= the one before the last one) in the race.這匹馬在比賽中跑了個倒數第二。
Most  weight loss products are next to useless. 

2.表「挨著」詞near,close to, by,beside和next to 的區別

near>closeto> beside(by) > next to

1)by 和 beside均表示「在…旁邊」,常可換用 
There is a chair by the table.

桌子邊上有一把椅子.
She stood by the window.
她站在窗邊.
The hotel is beside (/by) the river.
那家飯店在河邊.
Come and sit beside (/by) me.
過來,坐在我邊上.
Put your shoes beside mine.
把你的鞋子放在我的鞋子旁邊.
2) near表示「在……附近」,表示的距離比by和beside稍遠些,也時常換用 
There is a theatre near his home.
他家附近有一家劇院.
Don't play near the road.
不要在馬路附近玩.
There is a post office near No.1 Middle School.
第一中學附近有一所郵局.
3) next to表示「緊靠……的旁邊」 
The new building next to the bookstore is a cinema.
書店旁邊的那幢新樓是一家電影院.
There is a café next to the barber's.
理髮店隔壁是一家咖啡館.4)close to表示與空間上的接近,但接近並不表代挨著,只是相對於某個標準來判斷的.與near相似,比near更近.He parked his car close to the curb.
他將汽車停在緊靠人行道路緣的地方。

next to和beside兩個常用詞使用時的語境區別：

She sat down next to him on the sofa.她緊挨著他在沙發上坐下了。
(兩個人靠在一起，意味著他們關係親密)She sat down beside him on the sofa.
她在沙發上坐下了，坐在他的旁邊。(兩個人沒有靠在一起)

3.的固定搭配

1) next to nothing 幾乎沒有(幾無)...3) get next to 知道 (某事),靠近,討好
