No doubt: I love China and I am having a great time here. But there are so many things I never knew about China before coming here. I have to use 『I』 because I am not sure about everyone else. How many of these things can you relate to? And what things do you wish you knew about China before moving here?
No one told me that I will have money and still be hungry. Yes you read right. China has assorted and delicious foods but as a foreigner in this country, when you cannot read Chinese character and cannot speak fluent Chinese, you might end up hungry even plenty of money in your pockets. Well, no one told me that. I know I read that they speak Mandarin in China but no one made it specific to me that it would be this tough. How many times have you desired to eat Chinese local delicacies but could not because you do not know how to order such food? You are not alone.
My last experience was the worst ever since I came here. I and some of my friends went to 「Grand Ma’s Place」 to eat, when they handed us the menu as usual, it was in Chinese characters. With our broken Chinese we asked someone to help us select food. The end was not too cool. Yes she helped us make the choice but when the order arrived. It was not what we anticipated.
Food is one of the basic needs of human beings. Even though someone may try to overlook it. No one told me that I will miss my country’s food this much and end up eating only rice and chicken for almost 6 months.
No one told me that Chinese ladies carry umbrella every season. To be honest here, I do really wonder why so many Chinese ladies walk around with umbrella. In winter, spring and summer someone has umbrella over her head. This is fun to see for myself. After all if someone told me this, I might not have believed it.
No one told me that people will give me wrong direction even when they have GPS. Now this one is tricky. Maybe I am the only victim here. I cannot count how many times I have got on the wrong bus all because I asked someone for directions.
How about drinking hot water? I thought it was only a winter thing but even now people are still walking around with hot water bottles. Even though the weather is getting hotter and hotter.
I am not trying to be funny but I want you to flash back and think about those things no one told you about China and share with us. Feel free let me hear your view about what you did not know before coming to China.
