西方人天天吃麵包，麵包是他們生活中不可缺少的一部份。而且他們喜歡在麵包上塗抹黃油，在他們眼裡那可是一種美味。因此，黃油加麵包成了西方人最基本的食品，今天我們就要給大家介紹一個由黃油和麵包組成的習慣用語bread and butter。

據《美國地域英語詞典》（The Dictionary of American Regional English）記載，bread and butter是兩個人一起走路忽然被別人或某件東西分開時所使用的感嘆詞。如果一對情侶在林蔭道上攜手漫步，突然一個莽撞的小孩從他們中間跑過去，衝散了二人，那女友可能就會嬌嗔地要求男友：「快說bread and butter！」這句簡單的補救語也許蘊涵著這樣的祈望：「我們會像麵包加黃油那樣永不分離。」

《美國地域英語詞典》上引用的例句源自1939年出版的《堪薩斯州指南》，該書將bread and butter描述成當地學生中很流行的一種迷信說法。既然1939年該短語已經很普遍了，那麼它的歷史很可能更悠久，至少可以追溯到19世紀。

不過，bread and butter並未在牛津大學出版社1959年出版的《學生的學問及語言》中出現。由於該書只涉及到不列顛群島地區，所以bread and butter很可能是美國人自創的。

此外，bread and butter還有「生計；謀生之道；靠山」等含義，美國《新聞周刊》評論家大衛·安森（David Ansen）說過: "As ever, politics, vulgarity and sentimentality were the bread and butter of the Academy Awards."（政治、粗鄙和感傷一度成為奧斯卡獎的支柱。）
