此畫由Sir Edwin Landseer所畫。畫中可見北極熊在吃船員，地點是在加拿大北方靠近北極的海域。當初這幅畫是根據真實事件所畫，但後來的調查發現，那些被吃的船員似乎不是被北極熊吃掉，而是被人吃掉的。
目前這幅畫被掛在英國倫敦大學的一個考試中心牆上，每次舉辦考試時，校方就會把這幅畫用布蓋起來。據說若盯著這幅畫看，可能會讓人喪失心智，曾經就有考生在考試時一直分心看著那幅畫，然後就自殺了。
