廢話不多說，今天我們要推薦的繪本是——

Brian Lies
紐約時報暢銷書作家，近年熱銷繪本中不乏Brian的身影：
Bats at the Beach（海灘上的蝙蝠）Hamlet and the Enormous Chinese Dragon Kite（哈姆雷特和巨大的中國龍風箏）Hamlet and the Magnificent Sandcastle（哈姆雷特和雄偉的沙堡）……
高中時Bian就已經開始畫畫，大學進入了波士頓博物館學院學習（同時也是著名的藝術博物館學校），進修了心理學、英語和美國文學等課程。也是在這裡，Brian找到了他想從事一生的職業方向。
作品介紹
《The rough patch》講述了狐狸Evan失去了一直陪伴的狗狗之後的故事：
Evan和他的狗從不分離，他們一起玩、一起吃好吃的、一起聽音樂、一起去旅行……
他們還一起打理狐狸Evan的花園，把裡面的植物照顧得非常好。
可是有一天，狗狗去世了，Evan覺得一切好像都回不到以前了……
曾經生機勃勃的花園，現在被各種帶刺的、讓人發癢的、臭臭的、奇奇怪怪的植物取代了。
直到一天，一根彎彎曲曲、毛茸茸的南瓜藤悄然在狐狸Evan的花園裡冒出……

剛接觸這本繪本，就被他的畫面驚到了。
狐狸和狗狗的毛髮、茂盛綠油油的草地、隨著劇情變化的光影、像電影一般的分鏡。
畫面細緻程度讓你覺得像在看一部製作精良的短片。
不需要多加說明，跟著畫面就能體會到人物心情的轉變。
和孩子一起看的時候，可以細細地品味每一張圖的意境，也是一堂很不錯的美學教育。
書本的主題
1.如果身邊有很重要的人走了，我們會有什麼感覺？
Evan在失去狗狗後變得消極，從一個喜歡到處遊玩的人變得不愛出門。最驕傲的花園，也變得不想打理。
傷心、憤怒、難過、壓抑……
不只是親人的離世，朋友的轉學，曾經形影不離的玩伴有了更好的朋友，這些都會令我們出現情緒上的變化。
但是我們要知道，這是很正常，正是這些情緒的強烈代表了我們是一個健康的人，代表著我們有著豐富的感情。
2. 遇到這種事我們可以如何面對？
書的背後有這樣一句話：「A good place won’t stay empty for long. Something must grow.」（一個好的地方不會永遠空著，總會有新的東西長出來。）
是在說Evan的花園，也是在說我們「被失去」後空蕩蕩的心。
當我們失去後，我們可以做些什麼？
書的簡介裡寫到，這是一本關於失去和悲傷，愛和希望，還有友誼、好奇心和大自然的治癒力的書。
所以，Evan在失去狗狗後在種植、在社交、去遊樂場，去過他原本的生活。
因為只要我們還在生活，生活就能讓我們的心再次被填滿。

書中小彩蛋
第一遍看的時候，會覺得突然冒出來的南瓜藤是奇蹟。
再看一遍就發現，其實一切都是作者的伏筆：
在Evan和狗狗的日常畫面裡，就有過獲獎的經歷。
狗狗去世時，室內牆上也是掛滿了獲獎的勳章。
所以，後來的南瓜不是憑空冒出的，是以前種過南瓜再次發芽，這與書本「Something must grow.」主題相對應。
狐狸衣服後的紅色小毛巾，也是隱藏的小細節。
第一次出現在開頭：
第二次出現卻在狗狗去世，隔了好幾頁的位置：
之後頻繁地出現在畫面當中：
這條紅色的小毛巾代表著什麼呢？
有人說是希望，也有人說覺得這是狐狸Evan的心情……也是一個很不錯的討論方向。
藏得最深的要數書本開頭的第一頁，直接交代了整個故事：
只有影子的狗狗、狐狸先生背靠著的南瓜。
《The rough patch》真的藏了許多的細節，每一次看都會讓人有新的想法和感受，果然是獲得凱迪克銀獎的繪本。

Evan and his dog did everything together.
They played games and enjoy sweet treats.
They shared music and adventure.
They were together all through the day, and through all the seasons.
But what they loved the most was working in Evan’s magnificent garden.
There,everything they planted grew as big and as beautiful as the sky above them.
But one day, the unthinkable happened.
Evan laid his dog to rest in a corner of the garden,and nothing was the same.
Evan shut himself away inside.
Without his best friend, the garden was a bitter and lonely place.
One morning ,he found himself with a hoe in his paws. Swinging angrily, he slashed the garden to the ground.
He hacked it all to bits and threw everything into a heap.
But a good place won’t stay empty for long.
New plants sprouted and stretched toward the sky.
Weed.
Itchy one.
Spiky and prickly ones.
Foul-smelling ones.
These weeds suited Evan just fine, so he took care of them.
If Evan’s garden couldn’t be a happy place,then it was going to be the saddest and most desolate spot he could make it.
And soon it was.
When Evan found a pumpkin vine sneaking in under the fence, he raised his hoe to chop it.
But then he considered its prickly stems,fuzzy leaves,and spidery,twisty tendrils.
He let it be.
As the pumpkin vine grew, Evan cleared the weeds from its patch and watered it.
The vine responded to his care.
Around the time the evening air began to cool,Evan felt an old ,familiar sense of excitenment,
It was Fair Week.
He loaded up the pumpkin and drove to town.
He took care of important fair business,and gobbled down some delicious fair food.
He caught up with some friends,too.
It felt good to be out again,even if it wasn’t quite the same.
Evan’s pumpkin won third place.
「Prize is ten dollars or one of the pups in that box,」the judge said.
「I』ll take the ten,」said Evan.
But as he claimed his prize,he heard a scrabbling sound inside the box and thought it wouldn’t hurt to just...look.
