這次我在外刊文章中找了5個短語，如果對這5個短語不熟悉的同學第一次看到它們，會比較難猜到它們的正確意思，所以掌握這5個短語對於我們閱讀外刊很有幫助。
1. This goes a long way towards doing...
Day 71的文章中：
This goes a long way towards explaining why in 2019 Facebook boasted nine times the users, 21 times the revenue and 12 times the profit of Twitter.
中文翻譯：這很好地解釋了為什麼 2019 年 Facebook 的用戶數量是 Twitter 的 9 倍，收入是 Twitter 的 21 倍，利潤是 Twitter 的 12 倍。

"This goes a long way towards doing ..." 不是表示"走了很長的路"，而是表示了"對...很有幫助"（to be very helpful）。
例句：The money raised will go a long way towards providing essential food and medicine.
籌集到的資金將會為保障基本食物和藥物的供應發揮巨大作用。
!這裡要注意，有一些詞典把這個句型翻譯成"作出長遠打算"或者"長途漫漫"，是不正確的。
錯誤的翻譯：
*這裡應該翻譯成"此次訪問對於改善美巴關係有很大的幫助"。
*這裡應該翻譯成"如果這條參議院法案成為法律，會對修復美國破碎的移民體系很有幫助"。
*were it to become law是一個虛擬語氣的把if省略的情況，可以寫成"if it were to become law"，所以上面的翻譯寫成"即便成為法律"，是錯誤的。
Day 73的文章中：
That is a non-starter. Museums have limited space to stash stuff. Digital materials require storage and maintenance, too.
中文翻譯：這樣收集註定失敗。博物館的空間有限，數字資料也需要存儲和維護。

理解這個non-starter需要一點聯想力，non表示「不」，starter表示「開端的事情」「開頭的人或事」，non-starter很容易翻譯成「不能開始」。實際上，它表示"無望成功的想法或者計劃"（a plan or idea that has no chance of success. ）。
例句：The United-States is certain to reject the proposal as a non-starter.
美國肯定會以物成功希望為由拒絕這項提案。
「None of them could hold a candle to radioactive man."
Day 78的文章中：
No other business figure holds a candle to Sir Richard Branson when it comes to public- relations stunts.
中文翻譯：當談到公關手段時，理察·布蘭森爵士說第二，沒人敢說第一。

holds a candle的意思跟"蠟燭"沒有任何關係。
Can't hold a candle to sb./sth. 表示"遠遜於某人/某物；不能和某人/某物相比"。
如果你想表達在《乘風破浪的姐姐們》裡的某一位姐姐的表現是最好的，你可以說：
No other performer can hold a candle to her.其他表演者沒有一個能比得上她。
關於candle的短語還有：
burn the candle at both ends："一根蠟燭兩頭燒"，就是指因為起早貪黑而疲倦不堪。
Day 78的文章中：
Sir Richard’s space- tourism venture, Virgin Galactic, which was floated in New York last year.

如果對float這個詞不熟悉的同學可能會疑惑："這家公司在紐約漂浮"？
在經濟領域中，float可以表示"使（公司）發行股票；使上市"。
所以這個句子的翻譯應該是"理察爵士的太空旅遊企業維珍銀河(Virgin Galactic) 去年在紐約上市。"
還可以這樣表達：
He floated his firm on the stock market. 他讓自己的公司上市了。
關於"公司上市"還可以這樣表達：be listed
例句：The company is now listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
這家公司在香港股票交易所掛牌上市。
使用list這個詞的原因是：當一家公司公開發行股票並進行股票買賣時，它的公司名稱會列示在股票交易所（Stock Exchange）的顯示板上，所以用list來表示"在股票交易所掛牌上市"，而且一般使用被動式。
如"上海掛牌上市公司的股票"：the shares of companies listed in Shanghai
"香港掛牌上市的股票"：Hong Kong-listed shares
所以上面提到的be floated可以用be listed來代替。
Day 39的文章中：
This is a fool’s errand in a hyper-connected world in which technology and talent can flow freely.
中文翻譯：在技術和人才可以自由流動的這個密切聯繫的世界中，這麼做徒勞無功。

errand表示「使命、差事」，很多人看到fool's errand就翻譯成「愚蠢的事」。
實際上，fool' errand是表示「徒勞無功、白費力氣、瞎折騰」（an effort that is unlikely to be successful）。
同義詞有：fruitless, futile, in vein。
如果要表達：
「你讓我瞎折騰。」可以說：You sent me on a fool's errand.
「你覺得我們在瞎折騰嗎？」可以說：Do you think we're on a fool's errand?
errand在口語中也很常用到。
errand boy就是「跑腿的人、馬仔」；
