As long ago as the fourteenth century, an Englishman, Sir John Hawkwood, made the remarkable discovery that people would rather pay large sums of money than have their life work destroyed by gangsters.
早在14世紀,英國人約翰.霍克伍德就有過非凡的發現:"人們情願拿出大筆的錢,也不願畢生的心血毀於歹徒之手.

（1）as long ago as與as long as
as long ago as是時間狀語，表示「早在….」。而as long as則表示「只要」這兩個詞組不要搞混。
I knew him as long ago as the year 2000.
在使用as long ago as後，後面接的時候就不要再加上介詞in了，也就是說，不能寫成as long ago as in the year 2000.（錯）
Just as long as it's the truth. 只要是事實。
（2）would rather … than … 寧可…也不…
在表示「寧可…也不」時，同樣的表達可採用prefer to … rather than來替換，但在使用時需要注意有一點不同。在使用prefer to時，後面接的是to do不定式，比如：
She prefers to work rather than remain idele. 她寧願工作也不願閒著。
would rather 和 would sooner 一樣都可以表示寧願。
在使用時，應該注意。
兩者後的動詞均使用原型
He would rather go by car. 他寧願坐汽車。
兩者可以接從句，表示寧願某人做…
I would rather Tom left on an earlier train. 我寧願Tom乘前一班火車走。
