Dolch Words / Dolch Sight Words是美國學者E.W. Dolch 在二次世界大戰之前，針對當時英語兒童讀物做了系統分析和統計後整理出來的英語初級閱讀中最常使用的220個詞，加上兒童圖書中經常出現的95個名詞。這些詞在英語教科書，圖書，報章，雜誌中的出現率為60 to 85%。
Dolch Sight Words共分5個等級，包含了不少抽象意義的介詞和代詞，比如：the, of, from on等單字，這些字如果沒有和其他意義的單字聯繫起來，人們很難明白其意思。Dolch Sight Words也包含許多「較不符合拼讀法（Phonics）規則」特性的單字。比如：were，one, come, eight, 等字。這些字不能通過拼讀法認知，而必須通過視覺認識/記憶才能掌握，這也是為什麼Dolch Words被稱為視覺詞（sight words）的原因。
由於這些字是初期閱讀物中出現頻率很高的單字，所以如果孩子能夠在閱讀初級階段，首先掌握這些Sight Words，就能為他們在英語閱讀方面打下不可缺少的堅實基礎。
如果孩子單學習拼讀法，而忽視sight words的學習，那麼他們的仍然無法順利閱讀英語。這裡的關鍵在於sight words，因為phonics兼具發音，拼字既閱讀的功能，而sight words在孩子的閱讀材料中佔有將近60%-80%的份額， 也就是能夠幫助孩子擁有超過85%的閱讀能力。因此孩子在學習英語閱讀時，phonics 和 sight words的學習必須同時並行，相輔相成，兩者缺一不可，這是孩子學習英語最直接，最簡單的基石之一。
