動詞短語是由動詞和介詞、副詞、名詞等構成的，在句中作謂語。

137.stand by支持，袖手旁觀

用法：stand by後接名詞、代詞或者動名詞，在句中作獨立謂語。

 

例句：More and more people stand by the fallen old men.

越來越多的人對摔倒的老人袖手旁觀。

 

語法結構分析：More and more people是主語（More and more是前置定語）， stand by是謂語，the fallen old men是賓語（the, fallen, old是前置定語）。

 

138. stand for代表，表示

用法：stand for也可以表示「支持，容忍」，不可以用於被動語態。

 

例句：I don’t understand why you have to stand for the alcoholic man.

我不明白你為什麼要容忍那個嗜酒如命的人。

 

139.stare at盯著

用法：stare at表示一個延續性的動作，而不是瞬間結束的動作。

 

例句：She stared at the cat and wanted to know what colorits eyes were.

她盯著這隻貓，想知道它的眼睛是什麼顏色。

 

140. stick to堅持

用法：stick to中的to是介詞，而不是不定式標誌。

 

例句：She has always stuck to her own ideas, instead of compromising with others.

她始終都堅持自己的想法，不與其他人妥協。

形容詞短語： struggle against與……作鬥爭

用法：struggle against側重指與疾病或災難抗爭。

例句：At the end of his life, the old artist has been struggling against illness.
