課程介紹:教授會使用Close reading的方法教授課程,這種方法最大的減少了由於學生對於文獻背景的寫作不熟悉而產生的困難。同時教授希望學生通過這個課程學會創造性思考,因為中國的中學生普遍缺乏這一能力,而這種能力在美國大學中非常重要。Close reading是學習創造性思考的有效方式。並且教授將按照美國大學的寫作標準嚴格要求學生。

授課教授:教授是英語文學專業畢業。教授畢業於哈佛大學。自1998年起在美國大學教授寫作課程,至今由223年教學經驗。曾作為哈佛俱樂部(Harvard Club)的客座講師教授莎士比亞的仲夏夜之夢。
本課程從2014年開設至今,教授為零差評教授。

首先是大家非常很在意的閱讀能力。通過具體分析的方法,會加深你對文本不同層次的解讀,和你觀看問題的視野。這對於SAT、AP都會有幫助,因為莎士比亞比那些文章還是要深刻難很多的。
其次是思想深度。理解文學的背後,需要你進行聯繫,聯繫社會,聯繫不同的文學作品,然後產生想法,這個可以在閱讀中提出問題,以及讀完一本書之後的寫作中展現。
最後這個文學課讓我感受到什麼是真的文學,雖然到現在我也可能並不完全了解文學,但是文學課改變了我對於文學的偏見和恐懼。文字的晦澀難懂是因為你在生讀在翻譯,但是真正挖掘細節你會發現有很多有意思有深度的話題可以討論。比如在仲夏夜之夢中,不同人對於愛與夢的看法,反映了什麼樣的人生價值觀,有反應了莎士比亞怎麼樣的人生價值觀。你認同麼?為什麼?都是可以去思考的。而這些深入思考,正是大學希望你擁有的。
所以,綜上所述。文學課中提供的精讀可以讓你變得更強,更有深入思考的能力,並且用美國人的方式學習美國文學。

Q:可以一對二上課嗎?
A:不可以,曾經有一對雙胞胎想一對二上課,教授不同意。後來雙胞胎經過測試發現,課程是一對一對於文學作品的討論以及寫作的修改,所以一對二上課等於每個人半個小時。後兩人分別和教授上課。
Q:可以1次上課2個小時嗎?
A:不可以,因為每次1個小時的課程效果是最佳的,超過1個小時的精讀課程是沒有良好效果的。
Q:可以1周1次課程嗎?
A:教授在2021年春季不接受1周1次課程。
Q:如果閱讀材料沒有完成可以上課嗎?
A:教授在上課期間發現你沒有認真的閱讀材料,會終止本次課程,並且要求學生重新閱讀,下次繼續上課,本次課程不計入課時。
Q:如果學生沒有完成寫作作業可以上課嗎?
A:教授發現學生沒有完成寫作作業,會終止課程,要求學生完成作業後上課,本次課程不計入課時。
Q:如何評定課程等級?
A:教授會在上課之前,讓學生以郵件形式發送個人簡介,根據簡介評定課程等級。在課程進行中,如果學生進步迅速,也會被升級。但目前只有一位學生是從第3級課程開始上。
Q:上完第3級課程如果要繼續,如何上課?
A:目前此課程大部分的學生都與教授上課超過96小時,也有學生與教授上課長達兩年。教授後續會根據學生的情況來進行相應的課程授課。
Q:教授的授課內容學生閱讀過,能否更換?
A:閱讀過與進行文學分析是兩回事,讀過並不代表懂的以及理解。經過無數次的實際測試,學生們跟著教授閱讀過書籍後,發現此前等於白白閱讀書籍。
Q:此課程是否會提升SAT閱讀成績?
A:本課程的初衷是為了讓學生真正的提高閱讀能力和文學分析寫作能力,在進入大學後可以很好的適應大學課程。後發現1年以上的文學課程學生均有不錯的SAT閱讀分數,因學生閱讀能力提升所致,但此課程並不能代替SAT閱讀應試課程。

第一級課程
In this foundation class, the student will learn how to approach the text with sensitivity and understanding. This course is designed to help middle school and early high school students understand, analyze and interpret important works of literature. They will learn to communicate ideas through effective writing. Each student will participate in spirited discussions regarding the interpretation of the text. He/she will then write essays highlighting critical thinking skills and original ideas. Progress is determined by the student’s clarity and grace in his/her spoken and written expression as well as his/her complexity of thought.
Note: Students must be proficient in English

第二級課程
In this writing-intensive course the student will analyze and interpret literature of various genres. Specifically, each student will learn to establish a dialogue with the text in order to advance to a higher level of critical inquiry. It is essential that the student writes clear and cogent prose with an original thesis. Progress is determined by the student’s clarity and grace in his/her spoken and written expression as well as his/her complexity of thought.
We will focus on critically acclaimed short fiction, poetry, novels and dramatic works by European and American writers, including Shakespeare, Steinbeck, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Sessions will include spirited discussions and debates appropriate to the age and skill level of the student. Each student will produce five short essays and one formal paper that reflects the student’s nuanced understanding of the text.
In this intermediate class, the student will study texts that address questions of identity community. This course is designed to help prepare students for serious intellectual inquiry.
