Garbage bins for the four kinds of waste
A group of local lawmakers, political advisers, students and residents visited the city’s first waste classification ecological park in Nanshan District on Tuesday, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yesterday.
The activity, under the theme of 「Where Does the Waste Go,」 was aimed at familiarizing residents with end-of-pipe waste treatment and galvanizing more people to engage in waste classification, according to the organizer Shenzhen Municipal Urban Administration and Law Enforcement Bureau.
According to Yang Zhu, deputy head of the Nanshan Urban Administration and Law Enforcement Bureau, the garden-like eco park, which was established this year, integrates the classification and disposal of garbage like unwanted flowers and trees, waste furniture, glass, metal, plastic, paper, fruit, vegetables and kitchen waste, as well as waste batteries and lamps.
At present, the park’s daily treatment capacity of recyclables like glass, metal, plastic and paper has reached 45 tons, and kitchen waste has reached 120 tons. By 2020, the average daily treatment capacity of the eco park will exceed 230 tons.
According to Yang, a total of 600 housing estates in Nanshan District have carried out waste classification and the whole district will remove all garbage bins from the floors of buildings in the middle of December.
The practice is also being implemented in 3,508 residential estates in Shenzhen this year. By removing garbage bins from building floors, garbage is now collected at designated points set up in the housing estates.
Shenzhen currently has 731 garbage collection and transportation vehicles. A total of 3,500 tons of garbage is classified and recycled every day, which effectively reduces the pressure of waste incineration and landfill treatment.
