春運的客流量有多大？據統計，今年預計全國旅客發送量到達約30億人次。相當於讓歐洲、大洋洲、非洲的居民集體搬了一次家。
那麼作為一個極具中國特色的名詞，「春運」應該如何翻譯成英語呢？
美國有線電視新聞網(CNN)在向西方解說中國春運現象時，創造了一個獨有的英文詞彙——Chunyun。
Chunyun, or spring migration, is the world's largest annual human migration. It's triggered in part by millions of Chinese workers heading to their hometowns for the holidays.——CNN
維基百科上面對於「Chunyun」這一詞的解釋為：
Chunyun is a period of travel in China with extremely high traffic load around the time of the Chinese New Year. The period usually begins 15 days before Lunar New Year's Day and lasts for around 40 days.

除了Chunyun之外，還有兩個表達也常見諸外媒：
「春運」其實表達了兩重意思，一是表示春節前後的忙碌的運輸現象，二是指「春運期間」。
當指運輸現象的時候，常常用Spring Festival travel rush表示。
當表示「春運期間」時，則用Spring Festival travel season來表示。
春運一般持續40天，從春節前15天到春節後25天。Generally, the Spring Festival Travel Rush lasts for 40 days, from 15 days ahead of the Spring Festival to 25 days after.春運期間，鐵路系統面臨著極高的交通壓力，導致購票困難重重。During the Spring Festival Season, China’s railway system faces an extremely high traffic load, which results in great difficulties to obtain a ticket.

春運一般始於臘月十五，並一直延續到次年正月廿五，大量人群集中在春節期間返鄉。英文翻譯通常為：
① the Spring Festival travel season
② Spring Festival travel rush
後因為它漸成周期現象，說Chunyun或 the Chunyun period
一些老外也可以直接理解travel season 旅行/運輸高峰期
