一、確保這個單詞的確不必要
例如，「at present it is necessary to…」這個表達時間的名詞短語並不總是多餘的，可能意思是：這個需要只是暫時的，這時這個短語就不能刪去了。
通常沒什麼意義的範疇名詞偶爾也是發揮作用的：「in accordance with the principle of self-reliance, all army units should…」
像"make great efforts to" "pay attention to" "do a good job" 這些短語有時是表達了意思的："we must make great efforts in education"
甚至有些為了引導其它動詞的短語，也不是完全多餘的：「we must make great efforts to overcome this difficulty" 可能表明這個任務將會特別艱巨。
「Chiana has always followed a policy of peaceful coexistence" 這裡的短語是表達意思的必要成分，顯然需要保留。
二、聯繫上下文
例如，「we must follow the policy of putting quality first" 這個短語只是」we must always put quality first「 的中式英語？還是作者的真正意思是強調一項政策觀點？也許我們應該保留」policy「甚至徹底改動這個句子來強調它：」we must make it our policy to put quality first.「
