2018年12月24日(周一)14:00【主講】Prof. Krishna Kumar(AIPAAS Laboratory, Canada)【地點】北京大學力學樓434室【內容】A spacecraft or swarm of spacecraft represents a highly complex engineering system; they comprise of several subsystems such as attitude and orbit control subsystem, payload subsystem, thermal control system, power subsystem and propulsion subsystem. These systems are multi-input & multi-output (MIMO) systems generally ranging in hundreds of inputs and outputs. In recent years, the complexity of these subsystems has increased more than hundred folds due to high performance requirement and increased autonomous capability. The fault tolerant control, artificial intelligence and predictive analytics can play a significant role in meeting these requirements. Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) has been proposed for developing high performance autonomous spacecraft. The FTC includes fault detection and isolation (FDI), robust control, and reconfigurable control (RC). My talk will discuss on these methods and future challenges to achieve spacecraft autonomy.

I will first give an asymptotic estimate on the probability that 3D LERW passes a given point (commonly referred to as the one-point function). I will then talk about how to apply this estimate to show that 3D LERW as a curve converges to its scaling limit in natural parametrization. If time permits, I will also talk about the asymptotics of non-intersection probabilities of 3D LERW with simple random walk. This is a joint work with Daisuke Shiraishi (Kyoto).

These fractals usually exhibit strong self similarity and spacial independence. In this talk, we will explain how these additional properties should give the existence of a natural occupation measure on the fractal set, defined to be the limit of the properly rescaled Lebesgue measure restricted to small neighborhoods of the fractal. Moreover, the occupation measure is also the scaling limit of the normalized counting measure over the corresponding discrete set. In two dimension, when putting an independent Liouville quantum gravity background over such a planar fractal, the quantum version of the occupation measure still exists, where the scaling dimension is related to the Euclidean one via the famous KPZ relation due to Knizhnik- Polyakov-Zamolodchikov and Duplantier-Sheffield. The quantum occupation measure is supposed to be the scaling limit of the normalized counting measure of the corresponding discrete set on certain random planar maps. The picture described above is expected to be true in great generality yet it is only established for a few models to various extents. In this talk, we report a fairly complete picture for planar percolation on the regular and random triangular lattice.

Each agent updates its own control input at its own triggering instants by using local measurements in terms of relative states with respect to neighboring agents, and such local measurements can be done in a local coordinate frame. For all agents, a positive Lp signal function is included in the event detector functions, which ensures a week Zeno-free triggering for all agents. We also show that the proposed event-based consensus algorithms guarantee less triggering events in a bounded time interval compared to the conventional algorithm without Lp signals. The proposed event-based consensus seeking algorithm will be extended to multi-agent systems modelled by general linear dynamics, and networked agents interacting in directed graphs.

The battery management system (BMS) is in itself an important element to make the utilization of the battery in electric vehicles safe, reliable, and efficient. Recent efforts have designed efficient algorithms for conducting individual tasks of BMS, including optimal charging optimization, state-of-health (degradation) estimation, and battery lifetime prediction. The work on studying these BMS technologies as an integral whole is limited, especially in the context of fast charging, which is crucial for eliminating range anxiety and boosting the adoption of electric vehicles. This talk will provide my recent works on developing an autonomous research system to integrally tackle the key technical challenges of BMS that hinge on data: (1) How to accelerate top-down BMS technology optimization and prediction, for example, by quickly predicting failures and lifetime? (2) How to achieve a bottom-up understanding of the physics, such as the capacity fade mechanisms of a battery, for the rational design of BMS technologies across various purposes?

Following Tits' philosophy, we would like to regard the affine Weyl groups as the reductive group over Q_1, the 1-adic field. Although it is still premature to develop the theory of 1-adic field at the current stage, we do have a fairly good understanding on the conjugacy classes of the affine Weyl groups, together with the length function on it, and such knowledge allows us to reveal a great part of the structure of the conjugacy classes of p-adic groups. I will explain how this idea may be used in representation theory and in arithmetic geometry.

Exquisitely structured patterns arise as orderly outcomes of the self-organization principle. Analytically, via the sharp interface model, patterns can be studied as nonlocal geometric variational problems. The free energy functional consists of an interface energy and a long range Coulomb-type interaction energy. The admissible class is a collection of Caccioppoli sets with fixed volumes. To overcome the difficulty that the admissible class is not a Hilbert space, we introduce internal variables. Solving the energy functional for stationary sets is recast as a variational problem on a Hilbert space. We prove the existence of a core-shell assembly and the existence of disc assemblies in ternary systems and also a triple-bubble-like stationary solution in a quaternary system. Numerically, via the diffuse interface model, one open question related to the polarity direction of double bubble assemblies is answered. Moreover, it is shown that the average size of bubbles in a single bubble assembly depends on the sum of the minority constituent volumes and the long range interaction coefficients. One further identifies the ranges for volume fractions and the long range interaction coefficients for double bubble assemblies.

A very strong feature of her research program is the development of new chemical methods and in collaboration with chemical engineers to produce the next generation high magnetic moment nanoparticles and advanced functional nanorods, and novel hybrid and multifunctional nanostructures. Detailed mechanistic studies of their formation by sophisticated and advanced analysis of the nanostructure allows tuning of the physical properties at the nanoscale; these can subsequently be exploited for diagnosis, treatment of various diseases and waster water treatment.
In this presentation, speaker will present the most recent results from their group on synthesis and biofunctionalisation of plasmonic and magnetic nanoparticles for potential biomedical applications in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

By comparing enhancer landscape, transcriptional factor occupancy, 3D chromatin structure and transcriptomic changes during blood cell differentiation, I identified lineage-specific enhancers and macro-molecular interactions driving enhancer activation, providing initial insights into enhancer dynamics and gene expression programs directing lineage-specific transcription during hematopoiesis. Further comparison between the proteomic and transcriptomic changes in erythroid development uncovered post-transcriptional pathways leading to enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis. Perturbation of mitochondria interrupted intracellular metabolism, leading to altered transcriptional regulation and defective lineage differentiation, which provide a new pathway between mitochondrial biogenesis and epigenetic gene regulation indispensable for normal erythropoiesis.

Therefore, it is intuitive to restrict the randomization of the treatment factors to satisfy certain covariate balance criteria, possibly conforming to the tiers of factorial effects and covariates based on their relative importances. This is rerandomization in factorial experiments. We study the asymptotic properties of this experimental design under the randomization inference framework without imposing any distributional or modeling assumptions of the covariates and outcomes. We derive the joint asymptotic sampling distribution of the usual estimators of the factorial effects, and show that it is symmetric, unimodal, and more 「concentrated」 at the true factorial effects under rerandomization than under the classical factorial experiment. We quantify this advantage of rerandomization using the notions of 「central convex unimodality」 and 「peakedness」 of the joint asymptotic sampling distribution. We also construct conservative large-sample confidence sets for the factorial effects.

To improve the long-term performance of a platform, the optimal recommender system design trades off expanding market demand by recommending high-quality producers and reducing congestion by recommending low-quality ones. The traditional recommender system has been focusing on identifying and recommending the producers of highest qualities. Albeit optimal when producers have unlimited capacities, such a recommender system may result in substantial optimality losses in the presence of producer capacity constraints. Such losses are most significant when the demand and supply of the platform is balanced. If, in addition, the quality of a producer improves upon working for the platform, the platform should recommend low-quality producers even more often to improve their qualities. A dynamic re-balancing recommendation policy which maximizes the number of matches myopically converges to an optimal policy in the long-run. We also extend our results to a setting with multiple quality levels and a setting with horizontally heterogeneous consumers and producers. Our results shed light on the optimal recommender system design for a broad range of two-sided platforms.

For the sample period 2007~2016, we find that politically connected subsidy-receiving firms provide a lower amount of subsidy disclosures through annual reports than unconnected ones. This association is mainly driven by connected firms whose subsidies are difficult to justify, is stronger for firms registered in provinces with a higher level of corruption and firm with higher media attention, and becomes weaker following the anti-corruption campaign starting in late 2012. These findings suggest that politically connected subsidy recipients tend to withhold subsidy information to reduce the costs for the politicians they connect to and themselves from the public scrutiny of subsidies granted through relationships. Consistent with this interpretation, we further show that politically connected firms are granted more subsidies and this association is stronger in provinces with a higher level of corruption and becomes weaker following the anti-corruption campaign.
2018年12月27日(周四)12:00-13:00【主講】Weiwei Xu (National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences)【地點】first floor meeting room, KIAA, Peking University【內容】Some indications for tension have long been identified between cosmological constraints obtained from galaxy clusters and primary cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements. Typically, assuming the matter density and fluctuations, as parameterized with Omega_m and sigma_8, estimated from CMB measurements, many more clusters are expected than those actually observed. This has been reinforced recently by the Planck collaboration. One possible explanation could be that certain types of galaxy groups or clusters were missed in samples constructed in previous surveys, resulting in a higher incompleteness than estimated. In this work, we aim to determine if a hypothetical class of very extended, low-surface-brightness galaxy groups or clusters have been missed in previous X-ray cluster surveys based on the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS).We applied a dedicated source-detection algorithm sensitive also to more unusual group or cluster surface-brightness distributions. We found many known groups but also a number of new group candidates, which are not included in any previous X-ray or SZ cluster catalogs. In this talk, I will present a pilot sample of 13 very extended groups discovered in the RASS at positions where no X-ray source has been detected previously and with clear optical counterparts. The X-ray fluxes of at least 5 of these are above the nominal flux-limits of previous RASS cluster catalogs (> 3x10^{-12} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} in the 0.1-2.4 keV energy band). They have low mass (10^{13} Msun We demonstrate that galaxy groups were missed in previous RASS surveys, possibly due to the flat surface-brightness distributions of this potential new population. Analysis of the full sample will show if this might have a significant effect on previous cosmological parameter constraints based on RASS cluster surveys.

We first consider the construction of groupoid of morphisms of groupoids (Morphism groupoids), this would be the foundation for studying moduli spaces in orbifold Gromov-Witten theory. Then we consider groupoid extension/fibration with fiber being groupoids. A gerbe is a special case of groupoid extension. We classify groupoid extensions. Finally, we discuss the morphism groupoids of fiber class morphism to a groupoid extension. This is the first step to study the orbifold Gromov-Witten theory of groupoid extensions. This talk is based on recent joint works with B. Chen, R. Wang and Y. Wan.

University of California, Berkeley)【地點】KIAA, Peking University, Auditorium【內容】Understanding the formation of galaxies in the first billion years of the Universe is one of the key questions in galaxy evolution as well as cosmic reionization. Despite the remarkable progress on finding large samples of z>5 galaxies in the past few years, many big questions still remain unsolved. By reviewing recent progress and major challenges in this field, I will introduce a suite of high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxies down to z=5, taking advantage of the realistic models of the multi-phase ISM, star formation, and stellar feedback from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. With unprecedented resolution and details, these simulation provide a realistic sample of model galaxies, which can play a unique role in planning and interpreting current and future observations. I will discuss several key results we have learned from these simulations, including (i) the formation of globular clusters in z>5 galaxies and their complications in measuring the faint-end galaxy ultraviolet luminosity functions (UVLFs) at these redshifts, (ii) the effects of dust attenuation on the UV properties and IR emission of high-redshift galaxies, and (iii) the escape fractions of ionizing photons from z>5 galaxies and their connection to strong emission line properties. I will discuss how these results motivate future theoretical and observational work.

To deal with multi-scale problems for this model, we develop a family of asymptotic preserving schemes. These schemes have high order accuracy and are able to capture the correct diffusion limit without resolving the small physical regime. They are based on micro-macro decomposition and a reformulation of the decomposed system. We apply high order implicit-explicit Runge-Kutta (IMEX-RK) method in time and a local discontinuous Galerkin spatial discretization. Our schemes are unconditionally stable in the diffusive regime and have the standard hyperbolic time step restriction in the hyperbolic regime.

2018年12月28日(周五)12:00-13:00【主講】Hui Li (MIT)【地點】KIAA, 1st meeting room, Peking University【內容】Over the past decades, the discovery of a large number of young massive clusters (YMCs) in the local Universe and giant clumps in high-z galaxies suggests that clustered star formation is the dominant star formation mode. Mass and energy feedback from these enormous clusters is inevitably responsible for shaping the properties of their host galaxies. To model star formation in a more realistic way, I implemented a novel prescription in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations by treating star clusters as a unit of star formation. I tested this algorithm by running a suite of cosmological simulations with unprecedented parsec-scale spatial resolution. I found that various observed properties of host galaxies and star clusters are reproduced. Interestingly, we find some of these properties can be used to calibrate the subgrid models in the simulations. We follow the orbits of all simulated star clusters, estimate the cluster mass loss due to tidal disruption, and for the first time, investigate the connection between YMCs formed at high-z and the globular clusters observed at present. In parallel, to study how giant molecular clouds (GMCs) collapse to form star clusters and how they are eventually disrupted by stellar feedback from massive stars, I performed a suite of high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of individual GMCs with self-consistent star formation and momentum feedback. I find that the final star cluster mass depends strongly on the surface density of the cloud due to the force balancing between gravity and momentum feedback.
2018年12月28日(周五)15:10【主講】Dr. Kai Wang(王凱) (Postdoctoral of Harvard medical School)【地點】北京大學二教412【內容】Current protocols to differentiate human induced pluripotent stem cells (h-iPSCs) into endothelial cells (h-iECs) lack reliability. Here we describe a method for rapid, consistent and highly efficient generation of h-iECs from h-iPSCs. The protocol entails delivery of modified mRNA encoding the transcription factor ETV2 at the intermediate mesodermal stage of differentiation. This approach reproducibly differentiated thirteen diverse h-iPSC lines into h-iECs with exceedingly high efficiency. In contrast, differentiation with the standard protocol, which relies on endogenous ETV2, was inefficient and notably inconsistent. Our method generated h-iECs that were functionally competent in many respects, including ability to form perfused vascular networks in vivo. Importantly, timely activation of ETV2 was critical and bypassing the mesodermal stage produced putative h-iECs with reduced expansion potential and that lacked ability to form functional vessels. Our protocol could have broad application in regenerative medicine and reliably provide an unlimited number of autologous h-iECs for vascular therapies.

2018年12月27日(周四)16:00【主講】朱詩亮(南京大學物理學院)【內容】相位因子被稱為二十世紀理論物理學研究三大主旋律之一。幾何相因子(幾何相位)的提出是量子力學研究的開創性成果。相位因子是量子力學最核心的概念之一,對它的認識伴隨著整個量子力學和量子場論的發展。薛丁格方程的提出,虛數i首次出現在物理學運動方程中,表明複數的引進不僅是數學工具的方便,更是量子力學描述世界的必須,相位開始成為物理學的核心概念。稍後,狄拉克引入波函數相位因子,並用它證明,如果世界上有一個磁單極,那麼電荷必須是量子化的,這一優美的理論把相位和拓撲聯繫在一起。1954年,楊振寧-米爾斯非阿貝爾規範場理論的提出,把U(1)相位推廣到SU(2)相位,構築了粒子之間相互作用的基石。1959年,Aharonov 和Bohm 發現了AB相位,認識到要描述電磁場,場強不夠,矢勢更為基本。從1974年開始,楊振寧等用系列文章證明,要描述規範場,場強不足夠,矢勢有冗餘,而相位因子恰好能描述規範勢。

2018年12月27日(周四)10:30【主講】李聯合(英國利茲大學)【內容】半導體太赫茲(THz)量子級聯雷射器(QCL)是迄今為止唯一能夠在THz波段實現連續工作的高功率、緊湊型固態相干輻射源。自2002年研製成功以來,就引起了人們的廣泛關注和興趣,並迅速成為THz研究領域的熱點。經過不斷的器件設計改進和性能提高,其工作頻率已經可以覆蓋1.2到5.6 THz,脈衝輸出峰值功率達2.4 W。然而,由於基本物理機制的限制,目前THz QCL還需在低溫200 K以下工作。儘管如此,採用斯特令製冷器的「turn-key」 THz QCL系統卻已出現在商用市場上。THz QCL的材料生長製備是一項極具挑戰性的工作,僅有為數不多的研究所和大學有能力製備高性能器件。利茲大學是這一研究領域的先行者。經過十幾年的不懈努力和探索,已經實現了器件的可控性生長,能夠可重複性地製作實現各種頻率的高性能THz QCL並成功將其應用在了商用THz系統中。這一報告將討論這些高性能器件的生長製備、最新研究進展和部分應用【地點】清華大學物理系理科樓B406

2018年12月25日(周二)9:30-11:00 15:00-16:30【地點】首都圖書館A座三層青少年多媒體空間【內容】黃石國家公園簡稱黃石公園,由美國國家公園管理局負責管理。1872年3月1日它被正式命名為保護野生動物和自然資源的國家公園,於1978年被列入世界自然遺產名錄。這是世界上第一個最大的國家公園。黃石國家公園佔地面積約為898317公頃,主要位於美國懷俄明州,部分位於蒙大拿州和愛達荷州。黃石公園分五個區:西北的猛獁象溫泉區以石灰石臺階為主,故也稱熱臺階區;東北為羅斯福區,仍保留著老西部景觀;中間為峽谷區,可觀賞黃石大峽谷和瀑布;東南為黃石湖區,主要是湖光山色;西及西南為間歇噴泉區,遍布間歇泉、溫泉、蒸氣池、熱水潭、泥地和噴氣孔。園內設有歷史古蹟博物館。
