我深以為，好的翻譯，是譯者在充分理解英文原文意義的基礎上，用最貼切最易懂的中文詞語表達出來，讓聽者馬上能明白其中的意思。特別是在口譯的現場，如果用一些冷僻或高深的詞彙，會增加理解的難度，讓聽者感到雲裡霧裡。比如，「leave」最簡單直接的翻譯是「離開」，如果翻譯成「隱退」或「退場觀察」等，聽者總是需要「繞一下」才能去理解。如果一句話裡有好幾個詞語都需要「繞一下」，那麼整句話就會顯得晦澀難懂。
在AMI的培訓裡面，學員一整年反覆聽到同樣的詞彙，就自然明白其中的意思，所以不太會去深究用詞是否準確。比如我看到過infant community翻譯成「嬰兒社群」或「幼兒社區」，AMI的學員當然是知道IC代表的是15/18個月-2.5/3歲的混齡班，但是在從未接觸過蒙氏的人聽來，「社區」這個詞一定會偏向於理解成小區環境吧！
在中文裡，「教室」一般指物理環境，「班級」通常指教室裡的人的群體，對應的英文community完全沒有問題。Infant community如果翻譯成「託班」，大多數人能理解到：首先這是一個班級，其次年齡通常在3歲以下。當第一次翻譯這個詞的時候，解釋一下蒙氏裡託班指的是15/18個月-2.5/3歲混齡班。之後用簡單的「託班」兩個字，就完全可以讓聽者在大腦裡以最快的速度反應infant community的意思。可能這個例子不是非常恰當，因為大家對IC的接受度已經很高了，但是我們要知道，蒙氏還是非主流教育，大多數沒有接觸過蒙氏教育的人，聽到這些語言會感到非常陌生以及產生理解偏差。在美國，很多蒙氏的學校用toddler class 代稱IC班，用primary class代稱Casa班，也是同樣的道理。從蒙氏推廣來講，翻譯用詞簡單明確，少用生僻詞，也是好的。
我前陣子做了一些翻譯的工作，花了一些時間去研究和思考這些英文詞彙的本來含義，以及如何找到最貼切易懂的對應詞。這完全是個人的思想總結，如果您有不同意的地方，歡迎留言探討。
